The co-host of MasterChef, John Torode, has decided not to continue with the show following confirmation that a claim about his use of racially offensive language in the workplace was substantiated.
According to the BBC’s announcement, the claim was thoroughly examined and found to be valid by an impartial investigation.
Earlier, it was verified that Torode faced an accusation of employing racially offensive language, a claim substantiated during an investigation into separate charges leveled against his fellow host, Gregg Wallace.
Yesterday on Instagram (July 14th), Torode stated he can’t remember the supposed event and further clarified, “I don’t think it actually occurred.
Today, after catching up on the news, Torode posted on Instagram: “Despite not receiving any communication from BBC or Banijay yet, I’ve noticed reports suggesting I was fired from MasterChef. To reiterate, I have no memory of the allegations against me.
The investigation failed to provide any specific date or year regarding an alleged mistake I made. I had expected to be given some input on my departure from a series I’ve been part of since its revival in 2005, but recent developments seem to have put that decision out of my control.
According to a statement released by the BBC, celebrity chef John Torode acknowledged that he faced a confirmed accusation of using racially insensitive language. The allegation, which involved a highly offensive racial slur being used in a professional setting, was thoroughly investigated and found to be valid by Lewis Silkin, an independent law firm.
John Torode refutes the claim, asserting he can’t recall the reported event and doubts its occurrence. Moreover, he emphasizes that any form of racially charged language is entirely unsuitable in any setting.
The BBC regards this confirmed incident with great gravity. We have zero tolerance for any form of racist speech, and as previously stated, we’ve instructed Banijay UK, the producers of MasterChef, to take necessary action. Regrettably, John Torode’s contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.

Previously, the BBC announced they would not collaborate with Gregg Wallace on any future projects, after an investigation into his behavior was made public and its findings were revealed.
The investigation was initiated by MasterChef’s production company Banijay and conducted by Lewis Silkin, following reports by BBC News last year that 13 people had accused Wallace of historical misconduct. These accusations included inappropriate sexual comments made over a span of 17 years across five different shows.
In the following report, it was indicated that a grand total of 83 historical claims of misbehavior had been leveled against Wallace, with 45 of these claims being verified as legitimate.
Most confirmed allegations concerning inappropriate sexual speech and humor, as well as a case of unwanted physical interaction and another regarding being in an improper state of dress, were all found to be valid.
The previous week, prior to the release of the report, Wallace issued an apology for his choice of inappropriate words. However, he maintained that the report exonerated him from the gravest and scandalous accusations levied against him.

Today on Instagram, Torode announced that he’ll be wrapping up his involvement in Celebrity MasterChef, having just finished filming it alongside Grace Dent and two delightful holiday-themed episodes. This marks the end of his participation for now.
On a personal note, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every second of my time on MasterChef. However, it’s now time to hand over the kitchen duties to someone else. May the new chef cherish this role as much as I have. From a distance, I’ll admire the show’s future developments as I shift my attention to the numerous other projects that await me.
After 20 years of delicious dining, my stomach could use a break, but oh, the pleasure it’s brought me! Life is always evolving and flowing, and at times, our personal contentment may be found in unexpected places.
“Thank you for the many years of MasterChef.”
