James Gunn Responds to DC Fan Demand To Cast Grant Gustin as The DCU’s Flash

James Gunn often interacts with fans online, and recently addressed a request for Grant Gustin to reprise his role as The Flash. Gustin famously played Barry Allen in the Arrowverse TV series, while Ezra Miller played the character in the DCEU films. Due to Miller’s personal issues, he won’t be returning, leaving fans to advocate for Gustin, whose portrayal of The Flash was very popular on television. When one fan jokingly threatened a “riot” if Elliot Page were cast as The Flash instead of Gustin, Gunn responded directly.

James Gunn responded on Threads to questions about actor Elliot Page and his potential involvement in the DC Universe, stating he’s unsure why Page’s name is being brought up. Gunn also commented that he hasn’t seen evidence of the promised ‘riots’ some people were predicting. He added that he likes Grant Gustin. Page, known for roles in films like Juno and as Kitty Pryde in the X-Men series, was never rumored to be considered for the role of The Flash. Many replies to Gunn’s post indicated that the threats of unrest stemmed from transphobic reactions.

Some online chatter recently resurfaced from years ago, when fans speculated about Elliot Page potentially taking over the role of Flash from Ezra Miller during Zack Snyder’s time with the DC Universe. A fan on social media claimed James Gunn would be dismissive of Flash fans if he cast Page, despite this being an old rumor and predating Gunn’s involvement. Ultimately, Gunn responded because people were using their fondness for Grant Gustin as an excuse to criticize Elliot Page.

What We Know About Flash In the DCU

There’s been a lot of discussion online about Elliot Page potentially playing the Flash, but James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, hasn’t indicated anything of the sort. It looks like it could be a while before we see the Flash appear in a new movie or TV show. Gunn has repeatedly stated that the only reliable information will come directly from him or Warner Bros., so fans should be cautious about believing rumors or speculation.

James Gunn hinted in the first episode of Peacemaker Season 2 that a new version of the Justice League—calling it the Justice Gang—is being formed. However, don’t expect to see the classic heroes like Batman, Wonder Woman, or the Flash join this team. It’s likely to be more like the Justice League International from the comics, filled with lesser-known characters. While Mister Terrific stood out in the recent Superman movie, this new team will largely consist of heroes who aren’t typically considered A-listers.

Last December, James Gunn explained that a Flash movie wasn’t currently being made because they didn’t have a finished, workable script. He emphasized that development was paused and that he always requires a complete script before considering any casting choices, ensuring actors fit the specific vision for the film. Because of this, neither Grant Gustin nor Elliot Page are being considered for a Flash role, as a Flash movie isn’t yet planned for the DC Universe.
