Season two of After the Flood is back, and Jo is now a detective investigating a new, mysterious murder.
Although flooding was a major concern in the first season, the new installment introduces fire as a different, but equally challenging, problem.
With the danger of wildfires increasing in Waterside, and the potential for more flooding looming, a body is found in a strange situation, according to an official statement.
As I followed the story, the detective’s pursuit of the killer wasn’t just a case – it quickly put her at odds with some seriously powerful people in town. What started as a professional investigation soon became incredibly personal for her, and I was totally hooked to see how it would all unfold.
Matt Stokoe, who plays Pat in ‘After the Flood’, explained that the show is increasingly focused on environmental issues. He noted the inclusion of wildfires, saying, ‘We often think of wildfires happening in the United States, but we’re consistently hitting new high temperatures every year.’
I really appreciated that this show seemed to get ahead of the conversation, bringing important issues to light. It wasn’t just entertainment; it felt like the creators were doing something genuinely worthwhile by sparking a dialogue and preparing viewers for what’s really happening in the world.
Where were the fire scenes filmed, and what other places served as filming locations?
For more information, read on.
After the Flood filming locations
The show is filmed across Greater Manchester and Derbyshire in the North West of England.
As a film fan, I always appreciate a strong sense of place, and in this story, the location is almost a character itself. It’s visually stunning, really beautiful to look at, but it’s also heartbreaking because it’s a place that’s really struggling with flooding and the impact it’s having on the people who live there, as our executive producer, Nicola Shindler, explained.
Filming on location, where things actually happen, really adds to the realism. I especially enjoy shooting in the North West, and we have a fantastic team working on this project.
I’m really impressed with After the Flood because it seems to be all about recognizing and supporting people who are truly dedicated. They’re folks who put in the work, really get what their community needs, and know how to collaborate – it’s that teamwork that makes all the difference, and After the Flood is clearly tapping into that.
The setting for the story, the town of Waterside, was inspired by the real place of Glossop in Derbyshire. Author Gleaves fondly called it a “beautiful town.”
He continued, “I just love towns nestled in valleys. There’s something special about looking up and seeing hills surrounding a pretty town square, especially when there’s a lovely river flowing through it.”
“I’d never been there before, but I’ll be sad if I never go back.”
The scenes of the moorland fire were shot in several places, notably near Piethorne Reservoir and Watergrove Reservoir.
The story also takes place at Middlewood, a manor house in Clitheroe, and introduces new characters Alan, played by Alun Armstrong, and Harriet Benson, played by Steph De Whalley.

The dramatic opening scene of season 1, featuring a flooded river and a baby in a carrier, was filmed in Stockton-on-Tees at the Tees Barrage White Water Centre. Actor Rundle humorously compared the experience to a school trip.
She described the facility as a training ground for all emergency services. It includes a water course where they can adjust both the speed and amount of water to simulate different conditions.
As you’d expect, the physicality of the role proved a challenge.
Rundle described the filming process as physically demanding and exhausting. ‘I was completely worn out,’ she explained. ‘I relied on vitamins to get through it, and then I went to Spain afterwards to relax and enjoy a lot of white wine.’
Stockport’s famous Market Hall appears in season one, episode four, along with a well-known shopping area in Manchester.
As they drove over Barton Bridge, Sergeant Phil Mackie, played by Nicholas Gleaves, pointed out the Trafford Centre below. He described seeing Manchester bustling with activity, and noted a section of the car park had been transformed to resemble a Hollywood film set.
We put on waterproof boots and walked into an enormous tank designed to look like a street in a Northern town – it was about half the size of a football pitch. It was a powerful experience for everyone involved, and I believe it will significantly improve the show.
