28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Is Missing Two Major Characters in Its Best Scene

The new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is out now! While the ending was thrilling for fans, it also left some people confused. The film picks up right after the events of the 2025 sequel, following Spike as he joins a group of travelers called the Jimmys. From there, the story takes some unexpected turns, ultimately leading Spike to reconnect with someone he knows.

At the end of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Spike and Kelly manage to escape their pursuers, the Jimmys, and run into the countryside. They find a house while being chased by infected people, and the people living there thankfully come to their rescue. Though Spike and Kelly don’t recognize them, viewers will: it’s Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, and his daughter.

Selena & Hannah Aren’t In The Bone Temple’s Final Scene

Jim is the central character in the original movie, 28 Days Later, making his return almost thirty years later a highly anticipated event. The film concludes with Jim, Selena, and Hanna residing in a house where Jim recovered. They attempt to signal airplanes, but the movie doesn’t reveal whether they were successful.

The brief appearance of Jim in ’28 Years Later’ sadly confirms that he, Mark, and Hannah didn’t make it out of the outbreak successfully. This isn’t entirely unexpected, though, considering earlier films showed the island was completely sealed off. It’s a relief to see Jim survived all this time, and it’s impressive that he not only lived but also managed to raise a daughter in a world overrun by zombies – clearly, he learned a lot since the events of ’28 Days Later’.

Jim’s return is thrilling, but it makes you wonder what happened to Selena and Hannah. We last saw all three of them living together at the end of 28 Days Later, but 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple doesn’t mention them at all, leaving their fate a mystery. This opens up a few possibilities about where they might be now.

One heartbreaking possibility is that Selena and Hannah didn’t survive. Given how common death is in the world of the Rage virus, it’s quite possible they perished sometime in the nearly thirty years since the original movie. The last scene shows infected people still around the house, hinting that their fate may have been worse than Jim and his daughter’s.

It’s possible the group split up, with Jim choosing to remain at the house. Staying in one place for thirty years isn’t smart when zombies are around, as people need to constantly search for food and supplies. Selena and Hannah may have decided to leave and find new opportunities to survive, while Jim stayed behind to care for his daughter.

The most hopeful explanation is also the least probable. Since Jim and his daughter live in a large house, Selena and Hannah might just be in a room that isn’t visible to the camera. This would make sense if Naomie Harris and Megan Burns hadn’t committed to the third movie yet, as the filmmakers might have wanted to keep their options open for the sequel.

Will Selena & Hannah Appear In 28 Years Later 3?

Sony revealed in December 2025 that a third film in the revived series, currently titled 28 Years Later 3, is officially happening. This movie will conclude the trilogy started by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. Boyle will direct, and Garland is writing the script. Cillian Murphy is also expected to return, following his appearance in The Bone Temple.

As of today, it’s still unknown if Selena or Hannah will be in the upcoming 28 Years Later movie. Director Danny Boyle recently told Empire that currently, only Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return, suggesting there are no immediate plans – or at least, no announcements – about bringing those actresses back. Many fans will be disappointed, as those characters are just as crucial to the 28 Days Later story as Jim is.

Look, even if we don’t see Selena and Hannah again, the next 28 Years Later absolutely has to tell us what happened to them. It would feel really odd if Jim just completely ignored these characters when he runs into Spike and Kelly, considering how crucial they were to his survival in the original film. While there’s still a tiny hope Spike and Kelly might show up in the next installment, honestly, I’m not holding my breath.
