Marc-Alexis Côté, who previously led the Assassin’s Creed franchise at Ubisoft, is suing his former employer for 1.3 million Canadian dollars (about a million US dollars). He claims he was effectively forced to leave the company, a situation known as “constructive dismissal.” According to reports, Côté’s departure followed Ubisoft’s creation of a new studio, Vantage Studios, which was assigned control over major franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.
This change meant Côté was moved off the lead position for the Assassin’s Creed series and asked to move from Canada to France for a new job. The new role involved managing smaller game franchises within Ubisoft, which he ultimately decided he didn’t want, leading him to leave the company. He was surprised by Ubisoft’s statement that his departure was “voluntary.”
For over twenty years, Côté has been a key part of Ubisoft, contributing to the development of many of their most popular franchises. He worked on titles like Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, eventually becoming a game director for Assassin’s Creed 3. Later, starting with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, he took on the role of senior producer.
As the lead of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Côté revealed that Ubisoft was changing how it approached the series. In 2022, he announced the company would be taking more time to develop each Assassin’s Creed game, moving away from their previous practice of releasing a new game every year.
Ubisoft announced that Marc-Alexis Côté is leaving the company after a restructuring in March 2025. A spokesperson said they were sorry to see him go, but believe their teams will continue to build on the progress he made.
We’re incredibly thankful for everything Marc-Alexis has done, especially his work in building the Assassin’s Creed series into the beloved franchise it is today. He’s been a creative and dedicated leader, and his contributions have had a real impact on both our team and our players. We sincerely thank him for all he’s done and wish him the best in the future.
Vantage Studios is a relatively new part of Ubisoft, having launched in October. It’s still early days, and the studio hasn’t yet contributed to any major game releases. Ubisoft created Vantage Studios to help develop and expand existing franchises, providing developers with more creative control and leveraging Ubisoft’s existing resources and expertise.
The new studio will be led by Charlie Guillemot, son of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, and Christophe Derennes, who will both serve as co-CEOs. They will oversee several Ubisoft studios located in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia.
