7 Things Futurama Does Better Than The Simpsons

Although The Simpsons and Futurama are frequently compared, Futurama clearly excels in seven key areas. The Simpsons is a truly iconic show, practically defining adult animated television and having run for an impressive 37 seasons. But creator Matt Groening wasn’t finished, and in 1999, he gave us Futurama.

Despite having a similar look and sense of humor, Futurama and The Simpsons are quite different. Both shows have passionate fans who frequently debate which one is better. While there’s no single answer, Futurama generally excels over The Simpsons in several key areas.

7) Futurama’s Characters Actually Develop

One of the things people love about The Simpsons is that the characters rarely change. The show usually resets to how things were, so you can enjoy any episode without feeling lost. Futurama, on the other hand, focuses on character growth. While Futurama characters have established histories, their relationships and beliefs are always evolving.

6) Futurama Has A More Diverse Main Cast

What makes the crew of Futurama so compelling is their incredible diversity, which gives the show an advantage over The Simpsons. While The Simpsons family is deliberately designed to be a typical, relatable family, the main characters in Futurama are a truly unique bunch: a man displaced from the past, a robot, a one-eyed alien, an aging professor, a Jamaican accountant, a Martian immigrant, and a lobster-like alien doctor.

5) Futurama’s Pop Culture References Make More Sense

Both The Simpsons and Futurama are packed with references to popular culture, and that’s a good thing for both shows. However, the references in Futurama generally feel more natural. Because Futurama is a tribute to classic science fiction, these elements blend seamlessly into the show. In contrast, the references in The Simpsons can sometimes feel out of place, and occasionally they seem to be used instead of genuine humor.

4) Fry & Leela’s Relationship Is More Interesting Than Homer & Marge’s

Homer and Marge from The Simpsons clearly care for each other and their family, even though they face challenges. However, the relationship between Fry and Leela in Futurama is more captivating. The ongoing uncertainty of whether they would get together created a lot of tension, making their eventual relationship in the show’s later seasons much more rewarding to watch.

3) Futurama’s Setting Is A Lot More Interesting

Springfield, the town in The Simpsons, is famous for its quirky residents. But surprisingly, it was designed to feel like any typical small town in America. Creator Matt Groening actually chose the name ‘Springfield’ because so many cities share it – he wanted a name that was deliberately ordinary.

Unlike other animated shows, Futurama boasts a remarkably detailed and fascinating setting. The world of New New York in the 31st century is so well-developed that fans love to explore its history and hidden details. Things like the widespread owl problem and the diverse alien languages demonstrate the incredible amount of thought put into the show’s universe, making it more compelling than, for example, the setting of Springfield.

2) Futurama Has Much Smarter Stories

While The Simpsons has created many unforgettable moments with its popular characters and classic humor, it’s fundamentally a lighthearted show about family life in the suburbs. Though some episodes are quite unusual, most storylines aren’t particularly complicated. Even fan favorites like “Cape Feare” and “Marge vs. the Monorail” largely rely on familiar stories from films like Cape Fear and The Music Man.

Unlike some other animated shows, Futurama is known for its intelligent and thoughtful storytelling. Many episodes are built around complicated scientific ideas and original concepts, which appeals to scientists and experts. In fact, the show has even consulted with real scientists, PhDs, and mathematicians to ensure accuracy and creativity, as seen in storylines like the body-swapping plot in the season 6 episode, “The Prisoner of Benda.”

1) Futurama Is More Consistent Throughout Its Run

One of the biggest strengths of Futurama compared to The Simpsons is how consistently good it is. The Simpsons, on the other hand, is known for having periods of weak episodes, and many fans point to season 10 as the beginning of a decline. While recent episodes have occasionally been well-received, the fact that the show is often called “Zombie Simpsons” suggests a long-term drop in quality.

Unlike The Simpsons, Futurama has consistently delivered high-quality writing, even with its multiple cancellations and revivals. While it has fewer episodes, that actually helps maintain its consistency. Ultimately, Futurama proves that focusing on quality over quantity is a winning approach.
