3 Lord of the Rings Movies We Want To See More Than the Hunt for Gollum

While The Hunt for Gollum explores a lesser-known part of The Lord of the Rings story, there are other adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work that fans would be more excited about. Tolkien’s writing offers a rich world full of storytelling possibilities. Sadly, recent movies and shows that go beyond The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books haven’t quite lived up to expectations. Despite the potential of stories set in Middle-earth’s earlier eras – or even unexplored parts of the Third Age – projects like The Rings of Power and War of the Rohirrim haven’t connected with audiences as well as hoped.

While The Hunt for Gollum aims to recapture the magic of the original Lord of the Rings films, relying on past success isn’t enough to guarantee a good movie. Setting the story within the existing timeline actually creates a risk of changing established events, potentially harming the franchise’s reputation. Plus, choices like reportedly recasting Aragorn are likely to disappoint fans. I’m hoping to be proven wrong and see another strong Lord of the Rings film soon, but Warner Bros. might have had better luck adapting a different, more compelling story from Middle-earth’s history – something other than the events leading up to Frodo’s journey with the One Ring.

3) The War Between Arnor & Angmar Offers Action & World-Building Opportunities

The Lord of the Rings films briefly mention the Dúnedain people and the Witch-king of Angmar, but don’t fully explore their stories. A movie centered around the war between the Dúnedain’s kingdom of Arnor and the Witch-king’s realm of Angmar would allow for a deeper dive into this conflict. While it would need to be either a concise film or a series, the combination of exciting action and rich world-building would make it worthwhile. This film could also expand on the enigmatic Witch-king and reveal the history of Aragorn’s ancestors, explaining why their civilization declined.

2) Beren and Lúthien Has a Gripping Mission & Strong Emotional Core

Many people doubt whether a movie based on Tolkien’s First Age stories could succeed, but I think it’s possible with the right approach. A particularly good choice would be the story of Beren and Lúthien, one of Tolkien’s famous tales released after his death. Its heartbreaking love story and tragic ending would provide a strong emotional center for a film, and the characters’ dangerous quest to steal a Silmaril from the evil Morgoth would be thrilling and suspenseful. Finally, it would allow filmmakers to show Morgoth on screen for the first time, which is a really exciting idea. If this film did well, it could also pave the way for adaptations of Tolkien’s other great stories, like The Children of Húrin and The Fall of Gondolin.

1) Aragorn’s Backstory Would Be a Better Way to Flesh Out the Character

If Warner Bros. was looking to revisit the world of Lord of the Rings with beloved characters, a movie focusing on Aragorn’s past would have been a better approach. They’d still need a new actor for the role, but it would feel more natural to see someone younger playing him in a prequel. Changing actors within the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring feels disruptive. Aragorn’s earlier life is full of exciting stories, and while a miniseries might be ideal, Warner Bros. could structure it as a single film by focusing on his romance with Arwen. This would add depth to their relationship in the original trilogy and make audiences connect with Aragorn even more – all without negatively impacting the existing films.

As a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings films, I’m curious – which one’s your favorite? Let me know in the comments, and let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
