One of 2024’s Best Sci-Fi. Horror Movies Is a Major Streaming Hit 2 Years Later

As a sci-fi fan, I’ve always loved how much room the genre gives filmmakers to really build something special – and how easily it can launch a whole universe of stories. It’s perfect for franchises! And when you throw in horror, like with the Alien series, you get some truly legendary films. That franchise, with seven movies and a TV show under its belt, is often the first thing people think of when you mention sci-fi horror. What’s really interesting now is that the film that revitalized the series is finally available to stream, two years after its initial release.

Fede Alvarez, the director behind films like Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, brought us Alien: Romulus in 2024, and it’s quickly becoming popular on HBO Max. As of today, it’s the third most-watched movie on the streaming service, trailing only One Battle After Another and Immaculate (according to Flix Patrol). This is great news for the film, which was already a critical and commercial success when it first came out.

Alien: Romulus Offers a Fresh Restart for the Alien Franchise (And Goes Full Horror)

Alien: Romulus introduces a fresh story and new characters, stepping away from previous installments. The film takes place between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), and follows six young space colonists who find themselves stranded on a deserted space station. They soon realize they aren’t alone, and must fight to survive. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

Alien: Romulus is a scary and exciting movie that’s been especially praised for its stunning visuals and special effects. It successfully refreshes the Alien franchise while still feeling true to what longtime fans enjoy, largely thanks to the strong performances from the cast. Ana Spaeny, in particular, has received a lot of recognition for her portrayal of Raine Carrdine. The film has breathed new life into the series, and a sequel is already being written, though director Fede Alvarez won’t be returning to direct it—he’s handing the project over to another filmmaker.
