Game of Thrones Finally Gave Us a Better Replacement for 1 Original Character, 15 Years Later

The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, finally introduces a character who feels like a fresh take on someone from the original Game of Thrones – and in some ways, he’s even better. It’s amazing to think it’s been 15 years since Game of Thrones first brought George R.R. Martin’s popular book characters to life on screen. Despite the mixed reactions to how the HBO show ended and the debates surrounding House of the Dragon, those characters still remain incredibly memorable.

It’s hard to picture anyone taking over the roles of iconic characters like Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, or Daenerys Targaryen. Luckily, the new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, doesn’t even try to replicate them, and its main character is unique. However, a supporting character in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could fill the shoes of a character from the original Game of Thrones who deserved more attention. Be warned: spoilers follow for Episode 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Introduces Robert Baratheon’s Perfect Replacement

Robert Baratheon appears in only the first season of Game of Thrones, and the show highlights his flaws. He’s become a much weaker version of the person Ned Stark knew as a boy, lacking most of his positive qualities. By the time the main story starts, Robert has been king for over ten years and is extremely lazy and self-indulgent, easily giving in to bad habits. While we occasionally see hints of the charismatic leader he once was, these are quickly overshadowed by his poor treatment of Cersei, his children, and his kingdom. Ultimately, his weaknesses lead to his downfall, leaving a rather tragic impression.

While Robert Baratheon isn’t present in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the story introduces Lyonel Baratheon as a fun and engaging character who fills a similar role. From the very beginning, Lyonel is shown enjoying life, hosting a lively gathering with food, drink, and dancing. It’s easy to see parallels between him and the younger Robert Baratheon – he’s powerful and intelligent, but also witty and charismatic, making him a captivating character to watch.

Lyonel Baratheon Is an Improvement on the Game of Thrones Character He Resembles

Lyonel Baratheon is shaping up to be a more compelling character than Robert Baratheon was in Game of Thrones, and if the show stays true to the source material (The Hedge Knight), he’ll likely remain that way. He’s already made a strong first impression in the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and we haven’t even seen him compete in a joust yet. Daniel Ings’ performance promises to make him even more endearing, especially when we see him in action. Because Lyonel will have a larger and more significant role as the story of Dunk progresses, we’ll likely see much more of him than we ever did of Robert. Readers of The Hedge Knight already know he’s a more sympathetic character, too.

The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, feels more lighthearted and funny than Game of Thrones. It’s intentionally moving away from the original show’s grim and violent tone, embracing humor and a more charming atmosphere – though darker elements are still present. This change is reflected in the characters; where Game of Thrones focused on stern Baratheons like Robert and Stannis, this series highlights the more approachable Lyonel.
