A Movie The Screen Actors Guild Entirely Ignored Just Got 6 Oscar Nominations

As someone who follows awards shows, I was surprised that Sentimental Value didn’t win any awards at the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards). However, the film received six nominations at the Academy Awards this morning – including Best Picture and Best Director for Joachim Trier. Remarkably, it also earned four acting nominations despite being completely overlooked by the Screen Actors’ Guild.

Sentimental Value Has Been Getting Lots Of Love

This morning, Renate Reinsve (leading actress), Stellan Skarsgård (supporting actor), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning (supporting actress) all received Oscar nominations for Sentimental Value. This news wasn’t unexpected, as all four actors were strongly considered potential nominees. The film had been generating significant buzz until the Actor Awards nominations were revealed a few weeks ago.

The lack of recognition from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) for Sentimental Value was particularly surprising considering the film’s strong showing at other awards shows. It received six nominations from the Critics’ Choice Awards and eight from the Golden Globes. While Bill Skarsgård won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning, and Andrea Lilleaas, despite being nominated at both the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globes, didn’t receive any nominations from SAG – a complete shutout!

Does SAG Hate Foreign Films?

This situation fits a larger pattern. The four actors from Sentimental Value weren’t nominated for awards, and Wagner Moura, who won a Golden Globe for The Secret Agent, also didn’t receive a nomination, though he was nominated for an Oscar today. Both films are foreign productions, and in fact, the Screen Actors Guild didn’t nominate any performances from foreign films at all.

As a huge film fan, I don’t believe the awards bodies actively dislike international movies, but historically, performances in foreign films haven’t gotten much recognition. I think a big part of the reason is that it’s tough to truly appreciate a performance when you don’t speak the language. It’s especially noticeable with more nuanced acting, like what we see in films such as Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent. That’s why I’m so excited to see those kinds of roles finally getting the recognition they deserve from the Academy.
