Last year, a new feature in Microsoft Teams caused some upset among users. It’s designed to automatically share your location with your company when you connect to the office Wi-Fi, letting managers know if you’re working from the office.
After the idea gained popularity online, Microsoft clarified that the feature is optional and will be turned off by default when it’s released.
I wondered if the new, debated feature was connected to Microsoft’s plan for employees to return to the office, leading me to question whether the timing was just chance or a calculated move to increase monitoring and control over workers. Microsoft also announced they’ve delayed the full release of this feature, pushing it from December 2025 to January 2026.

Microsoft has revised its rollout schedule, and the new Wi-Fi location tracking feature is now expected to be widely available by mid-March, according to Forbes.
The company hasn’t said why the new feature is taking longer to launch. They might be using the extra time to fix problems and address feedback from users.
According to UC Today:
Automatically setting work locations seems like a simple improvement to user experience – it saves people from having to update information manually and reduces a burden on busy employees. However, it actually highlights a key issue that many companies are realizing: successful hybrid work relies just as much on trusting employees as it does on providing the right technology.
I’ve noticed the company is really focused on giving users control and setting clear boundaries. Also, the Wi-Fi location tracking isn’t active 24/7 – it stops updating once work hours are over. And to ensure privacy, the recorded work location is automatically cleared at the end of each day.
