Netflix has hosted live events before, but ‘Skyscraper Live’ is a completely new experience – even for the people making it happen.
Okay, so I just heard something incredible! Alex Honnold – you know, the free solo climber from ‘Free Solo’? – is going to climb the outside of Taipei 101, that massive skyscraper! It’s over 1,600 feet tall, and he’s planning to climb all 101 floors without any ropes! And the best part? Netflix is going to live stream the whole thing. I can’t even imagine how intense that will be to watch!
Before his climb, Honnold explained he wasn’t concerned with the crowd. He pointed out that even with many people watching, he wouldn’t be able to see them – it wasn’t like performing for an audience in a theater.
Who is Alex Honnold? Keep reading to find out more about this climber and the incredible feat he’s attempting.
Who is Alex Honnold?

Alex Honnold is a rock climber best known for his free solo climbing up big walls.
I’ve always been fascinated by Alex Honnold’s journey. It’s incredible to learn that even from a young age, he was competing in climbing championships all over the country and internationally. He’s even said himself that he wasn’t immediately a star – it’s inspiring to see how far dedication and hard work can take someone, even if they don’t start as a ‘natural’!
He explained that many other climbers were naturally gifted, having started young and possessing incredible strength from the beginning. He didn’t have that same natural talent. Instead, he simply loved climbing and has improved steadily through consistent practice, but he’s never considered himself naturally gifted.
He first became well-known in the climbing world in 2008 when he climbed Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face without ropes. This impressive feat was featured in the documentary, Alone on the Wall.
I remember being absolutely stunned back in 2017 when Alex Honnold did something nobody thought possible: he free soloed El Capitan in Yosemite. It wasn’t just climbing; it was a historic feat, the first of its kind, and it instantly cemented his place in adventure sports legend.
Filmmakers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin documented this climb in their award-winning documentary, Free Solo, which earned the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2018.
What is Skyscraper Live?
Skyscraper Live is a two-hour livestream documenting Alex Honnold’s climb of a skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan – one of the tallest buildings in the world.

What has Alex Honnold said about Skyscraper Live?
It’s safe to say, Honnold is rather excited about his next free solo adventure.
When asked about his interest in climbing Taipei 101, Honnold explained simply, “Why not?” He described it as an amazing and uniquely climbable skyscraper, noting that unlike many others, it’s actually possible to scale it.
It’s incredibly difficult to get permission to climb buildings, and since I have it, I need to seize the opportunity. These chances don’t come around often, so I have to act on it now.
