Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Streaming Struggles Continue

Viewers are still experiencing fluctuating streaming quality after the latest episode of the new Star Trek series aired. Despite this, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has managed to squeeze back into the top 10 most-watched shows on Paramount+, according to FlixPatrol.

According to FlixPatrol, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is currently ninth in the rankings. The latest episode explored a thought-provoking question: Is Starfleet truly dedicated to peaceful exploration, or is that just a cover for a more militaristic goal of expanding into space?

The show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy explores this concept in its storyline, but doesn’t offer a definitive solution – and that’s likely okay. Considering Star Trek hasn’t fully answered this question over its entire run, it’s unrealistic to expect Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to resolve it in just one episode.

It remains to be seen if Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will stay popular on Paramount+. Usually, new, successful shows stay in the top 10 even between new episodes. If the show only gets a small boost in viewers when new episodes are released, that likely means it’s not performing very well.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Remains a Divisive Paramount+ Series

The new series centers around cadets while they’re still students at Starfleet Academy. This approach might not appeal to longtime Star Trek viewers who prefer stories about experienced starship crews, as it feels more like a young adult novel than traditional Star Trek.

Set roughly 300 years after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place in the 32nd century. The United Federation of Planets and Starfleet are still rebuilding after a devastating event called “The Burn.” The series features new faces in the Star Trek universe, including Holly Hunter as the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy and Captain of the USS Athena, Nahla Ake, and Paul Giamatti as the main villain in the first season, Nus Braka.

In addition to new characters, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy brings back some beloved actors. Robert Picardo returns as the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, and Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr reprise their roles as Jett Reno and Admiral Charles Vance from Star Trek: Discovery. Mary Wiseman also makes a guest appearance as Sylvia Tilly from Discovery.

Critics generally like Starfleet Academy, giving it an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers aren’t as impressed, with a fan score of only 43%.

The cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy features Holly Hunter as the chancellor of Starfleet Academy, alongside new cadets played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard. Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, and Robert Picardo also star, with special appearances by Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman, and recurring roles for Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti.
