Even though 2026 has just started, one game is already being called the worst of the year – and possibly the decade. However, 2026 is still looking like a fantastic year for video games overall. We’re expecting highly anticipated titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Fable, Marvel’s Wolverine, and Grand Theft Auto VI to be released. Despite the arrival of this exceptionally bad game, which is surprisingly setting records, the year still promises a lot of great releases.
TeamKill Media’s Code Violet launched this year as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The game originally gained attention as a spiritual successor to Capcom’s Dino Crisis series. It’s an action-horror title where players control Violet as she explores a strange facility overrun with dangerous dinosaurs and enemies. While the concept of Code Violet seemed promising, the final product unfortunately doesn’t live up to its potential.
Critics haven’t been kind to Code Violet, giving it a very low score of 27/100 on Metacritic based on 14 reviews. This is an exceptionally poor score, even for games considered unsuccessful. Player reviews echo this sentiment, with an average score of 2.5/10 on Metacritic and 2.92/5 on the PlayStation Store. Overall, Code Violet has been a critical failure.
Code Violet Is a Historically Awful Game
Okay, so I’ve been following the reviews for Code Violet, and honestly, they’re disastrous. It’s looking like it would have been the absolute worst-rated game of 2025! Remember MindsEye from last year, the one everyone agreed was a flop? Well, Code Violet is scoring even lower – its Metascore is way down at 37/100. It’s pretty rough, to say the least.
Actually, Code Violet isn’t just expected to be among the worst games of 2026—it’s already one of the lowest-rated games of the last ten years. Its review scores are even lower than those of notoriously bad games like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, Postal 4, Past Cure, and The Quiet Man. The only game with worse reviews in the past decade is 2017’s Road Rage, which scored a slightly lower 26/100 on Metacritic. While Metacritic scores aren’t always perfect, they clearly show just how negatively Code Violet has been received since it came out.
After 2026, Code Violet is likely to be remembered as one of the worst games released on current consoles. Unless a truly terrible game appears in the future, it may set a new low standard for games on PS5 and other platforms. Let’s hope no other games reach this level of poor quality.
