Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Reboot Can Finally Solve One of TV’s Biggest Cliffhangers, 22 Years Later

I’m so excited to hear that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back! It’s amazing that the reboot/sequel could finally resolve a huge cliffhanger from the original series. When Buffy ended in 2003, it felt like a good conclusion with Buffy and the Slayers closing the Hellmouth and defeating the First Evil. But the story wasn’t completely over because Angel still had one more season! That finale, with Angel, Spike, Gunn, and Illyria facing a whole army of monsters during the apocalypse, just left us hanging, and I’m hoping this new show will address what happened next.

The series Angel concluded with the main characters standing in the rain, ready for one final battle. This was a fitting end because it highlighted a core truth about Angel’s life: the fight for good is never truly over. Despite being a satisfying conclusion, the ending left things open-ended, and if the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot continues the story, it will need to address the events of this dramatic showdown.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Should Mention Angel

Fans of the shows Angel and Buffy know that their stories continued in comic books. The comics picked up right after the events of the Angel TV finale, revealing that the Senior Partners had condemned Los Angeles to Hell, where Angel continued to battle evil. Even after death, Wesley remained tied to Wolfram & Hart, while Gunn became a vampire and began hunting new victims. Spike and Illyria also appear in the comics, continuing their journeys.

Look, just because something happens in the Buffy comics doesn’t automatically make it part of the story we saw on TV, especially with this new reboot coming. Let’s be real, a lot of people don’t read the comics, and those of us who loved the original Buffy and Angel are probably wondering what happened during big events. Angel had a fantastic, conclusive ending, but this new series needs to address what happened to Angel and the state of Los Angeles after the original show wrapped. Honestly, even just a quick mention of where Angel is would be enough to satisfy fans and close that particular loop. It’s about respecting the existing story for those of us who invested years in it.

Who Else Could Return in Buffy Reboot?

Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy Summers in the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, but David Boreanaz won’t be returning as Angel. Boreanaz has stated he’s done with the character, even considering the show’s premise that Angel might still be alive. He feels he’s aged too much, while Angel wouldn’t have aged at all. However, Gellar has hinted that anything is possible and fans shouldn’t rule out the return of other original cast members.

Bringing back certain characters wouldn’t make sense for the show. For example, Joyce Summers’ death was a powerfully emotional moment in Buffy, and undoing that would diminish its impact. Sadly, a return for Dawn is unlikely following Michelle Tratchenberg’s recent passing. However, there are still many possibilities, like James Marsters reprising his role as Spike, which could also reveal what happened to Angel, as he was with them at the time.

The reboot will primarily feature new characters, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong taking on the role of the new Slayer, Nova. While the show will focus on new faces, fans might enjoy seeing familiar characters return, like Eliza Dushku as Faith, and there’s a chance Alyson Hannigan could reprise her role as Willow from the original Scooby Gang. Unfortunately, Nicholas Brendon is unlikely to return as Xander due to personal issues. Other past characters could reappear, but David Boreanaz probably won’t be involved. However, the series needs to resolve the cliffhanger from the Angel finale to give fans closure.
