The newest addition to the Monster series features Charlie Hunnam, known from Sons of Anarchy, playing the part of a notorious real-life criminal. It originally launched on Netflix in October 2025 and immediately gained popularity.
Netflix recently published a report called “What We Watched,” detailing the most popular shows on its platform between July and December 2025. The report revealed that Monster: The Ed Gein Story ranked as the sixth most-watched show on Netflix during that period.
The series The Ed Gein Story is based on the disturbing true story of Ed Gein, a notorious murderer and grave robber who influenced many famous horror movie villains. Charlie Hunnam played Gein in the show, which quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular releases after premiering on October 3, 2025.
As a total movie and TV buff, I was really interested to see Netflix’s latest numbers. It turns out that The Ed Gein Story did incredibly well, racking up 56 million views between July and December of 2025! That put it right behind the classic Stranger Things (from 2016), which still managed 57 million views. But Wednesday Season 2 absolutely crushed it with 124 million views, taking the top spot. Stranger Things 5 (also 2025) was a strong second, bringing in 94 million views. It’s fascinating to see what people are watching!
Season 3 of the Monster anthology series, The Ed Gein Story, followed Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. This was the first season Ryan Murphy didn’t direct; Ian Brennan took on the roles of creator, writer, and showrunner. Critics haven’t been kind, giving the season a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 42 reviews. However, audiences seem to feel differently, giving it a 49% score after over 1,000 reviews.
Charlie Hunnam Reveals How He Got the Part
Charlie Hunnam described a memorable meeting with producer Ryan Murphy about the role of the infamous killer. Hunnam explained that Murphy arrived late, clearly immersed in research. “He’d been working on the character of Ed Gein all day and just started talking about him,” Hunnam recalled. After about two hours of discussion, Murphy finally asked if Hunnam was interested in taking on the part.
Hunnam explained he took the role because it felt like a genuine exploration of what it means to be human, rather than simply focusing on shocking or disturbing content. He jokingly concluded by saying that’s how he found himself in his current situation.
