George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead essentially created the modern zombie, and the popularity of flesh-eating, apocalyptic zombies hasn’t stopped growing. For decades, zombies have become a huge part of our culture, inspiring successful franchises like The Walking Dead and Resident Evil. The zombie genre has thrived in the 21st century, and now a follow-up to one of the greatest zombie films of all time has just been released on Hulu.
With the recent success of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and rumors of another film in the works, fans are rediscovering the 28 Days Later franchise. Now, 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, is available to stream on Hulu, having joined the platform on January 1st. The film picks up six months after the original 28 Days Later, following the US Army’s attempt to restore order in a quarantined London, before a new outbreak of the deadly Rage Virus erupts within the supposedly safe zone.
28 Weeks Later Is an Intense Horror Sequel That Successfully Expanded the Rage Virus World
Though it’s the lowest-rated installment in the 28 Days Later series, 28 Weeks Later is still a well-received film, earning a 73% score from critics and a 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have called it a relentlessly intense, smart, and horrifying horror movie. Despite many horror sequels disappointing fans, 28 Weeks Later successfully built upon the original’s terrifying world. The film delivers a brutal and action-packed continuation, expanding the scope of the outbreak to a global level and highlighting the breakdown of international efforts to contain the virus. It deepens the story’s background and increases the tension by exploring the conflict between maintaining order and the resulting chaos and panic.
I was so thrilled when 28 Weeks Later came out! It didn’t quite reach the heights of the original, but it was still a huge success, both with critics and audiences – it scored really well, though just a bit under the amazing numbers 28 Days Later got. And it made a ton of money – over $72 million worldwide on a $15 million budget! It proved there was still a real appetite for this world, which eventually led to a third film. Now, the franchise is experiencing a fantastic revival with the 28 Years Later series. The first film came out in 2025, and the recent second installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is already one of the biggest hits of 2026! I’ve even heard they’re working on another one, which is incredibly exciting!
