The latest film in the 28 Days Later series, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is experiencing a drop in viewership in its second week of release. This fourth installment picks up directly after the 2025 film 28 Years Later. Nia DaCosta directed the movie, with a script by Alex Garland, and the cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Chi Lewis-Parry.
The latest film in the series, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, came out on January 16th and made $12.5 million in its first three days. While this was lower than the $30 million earned by the previous movie, it was still the second-highest opening weekend gross for any film in the franchise.
Okay, so the latest numbers are in, and it looks like 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is expected to make around $4.2 million this weekend. That brings its total to about $4.2 million domestically, but unfortunately, it’s a pretty big drop from last weekend – around 66%. It’s actually pretty similar to how the first 28 Years Later did in its second weekend back in 2025, which saw a drop of about 67.5%.
It’s common for horror movies to experience a significant drop in ticket sales during their second weekend in theaters – often 60% or more. This is because horror films usually attract most of their audience right away. Several horror titles actually rank among the biggest second-weekend drops in movie history, including We Bury the Dead (2026, No. 10, -85.7%), Dangerous Animals (2025, No. 19, -82.6%), and Friday the 13th (2009, No. 36, -80.4%).
The latest two films in the series are doing much worse than the previous ones. When the first 28 Days Later came out in 2003, ticket sales only fell by 40.3% in its second weekend. Similarly, 28 Weeks Later from 2007 experienced a 44.4% drop in sales during its second weekend.
The new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, might not make back its production costs. It reportedly cost $63 million to make, meaning it could need to earn as much as $157 million in theaters just to break even.
The latest film in the series only just managed to cover its costs, earning a little over $151.3 million worldwide. With the sequel performing similarly in the US, it’s likely The Bone Temple won’t reach even $65 million in total global earnings by the time it leaves theaters.
The Years films were planned as a three-part series, but if 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple doesn’t make its money back, it’s unlikely a third movie will ever be made.
