Windows 11 users have experienced significant issues following Microsoft’s January 2026 Patch Tuesday updates. Instead of resolving problems, the updates appear to have created new ones, leading to two emergency fixes released outside the regular update schedule. These fixes address critical errors caused by the initial update.
This update fixes a problem that was causing Outlook and cloud services like OneDrive and Dropbox to stop working after the recent security updates (Patch Tuesday). Previously, users had to remove those updates as a temporary fix, but installing KB5078127 for versions 24H2 and 25H2 should now resolve the issue.
Microsoft released an update today, January 24, 2026, to fix a problem. This update includes all the security improvements from the January 2026 update released on January 13, 2026, and also builds on a previous out-of-band update from January 17, 2026. That earlier update fixed issues with remote desktop connections and problems with computers failing to enter hibernation.
Here’s the official changelog for the KB5078127 update from Microsoft:
- Fixed: After installing the Windows update released on and after January 13, 2026, some applications became unresponsive or encountered unexpected errors when opening files from or saving files to cloud-based storage, such as OneDrive or Dropbox. In certain Outlook configurations that store PST files on OneDrive, Outlook may hang and fail to reopen unless the process is terminated or the system is restarted. Users may also see missing sent Items or previously downloaded emails being re‑downloaded.
The update is also being released for other versions of Windows, like Windows 11 23H2 and various Windows Server editions. For the most up-to-date information about how this affects your specific version of Windows, please visit the Windows release health dashboard.
Microsoft has released another urgent update for Windows 11 users, marking the second one this week. The previous update, issued on January 17th, addressed significant problems that some users experienced after the January 13th security updates.
Microsoft’s recent Windows update initially caused problems with shutting down, hibernating, and using Remote Desktop on PCs running version 23H2. While a quick fix released on January 17th resolved those issues, it unfortunately caused problems with some popular apps like Outlook, OneDrive, and Dropbox.
Windows quality is currently at its lowest point in recent memory, making this a very difficult start to the year for Microsoft. Hopefully, the next update, scheduled for Patch Tuesday, will bring improvements, as things can hardly get worse.
