As a long-time fan, I’ve been a little worried about the future of Doctor Who recently. While the idea of the BBC teaming up with Disney+ seemed great, it hasn’t quite worked out as everyone hoped. Even the people making the show have said things didn’t go perfectly with the Disney partnership – surprisingly, all that extra money didn’t actually make the show better. Considering how anxious the fanbase always is – especially remembering how the show was cancelled back in 1989 and then thankfully brought back in 2005 – it’s no wonder so many of us have been concerned, even with the BBC trying to reassure us.
Zai Bennett, the CEO and Chief Creative Officer of BBC Studios Global Content, recently spoke with Deadline about the future of Doctor Who. While he wouldn’t say where the money will come from to cover recent funding cuts, he assured readers that the show—the longest-running science fiction series on television—will continue. He emphasized that everyone involved is dedicated to ensuring Doctor Who has a successful future, and that they are already working on the upcoming Christmas special and future episodes. Bennett also stated that all parties are united in their commitment to the show.
Doctor Who Has a Future, But Details Have Yet to Be Decided

It’s understandable why fans of Doctor Who were anxious. The show has a history of being canceled and then brought back. Towards the end of Chris Chibnall’s time leading the show, the BBC had trouble finding someone to take over. While Russell T. Davies – who originally brought the show back in 2005 – did return, the collaboration with Disney didn’t go as planned. Instead of setting up a long-term future for Doctor Who, the partnership only lasted for two seasons and one additional series.
It’s important to remember that the struggles with Doctor Who weren’t solely its own doing. 2025 marked a turning point for streaming services, as the high costs of producing TV shows forced companies to rethink their strategies. Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, said Disney admitted streaming was no longer viable, and the creators of Stranger Things felt the industry had changed so much that a show like theirs couldn’t be made today. This is the broader situation that explains Doctor Who‘s less-than-ideal results, and the BBC is likely aware of these industry-wide issues.
David Tennant is back for one last Doctor Who Christmas special, likely resolving the cliffhanger from the previous finale—where Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor seemed to transform into Billie Piper. The BBC is currently prioritizing this special while also planning the show’s future. Recent statements from those in charge are encouraging, confirming the BBC remains committed to Doctor Who and that the show isn’t being cancelled. Now, we simply have to wait to see what they come up with next.
