The upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel Studios’ most ambitious project yet, bringing together a huge cast of characters from across the multiverse. Fans have been eager to see how directors Joe and Anthony Russo will manage such a large ensemble and give each character a meaningful role, especially with the confirmed return of Chris Evans as Captain America and hints of many other surprises. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether Ghost Rider will appear, but it seems the Spirit of Vengeance might not be included after all.
A recent report from Daniel Richtman (via ComicBookMovie) indicates that Ghost Rider won’t be appearing in the upcoming Avengers Doomsday movie. Richtman stated that while they had previously considered casting Ghost Rider, he’s no longer slated to be in the film, suggesting a change of plans.
It’s Better If Ghost Rider Isn’t In Avengers: Doomsday

While it’d be exciting to see a Ghost Rider character appear in the upcoming Doomsday movie – and could even hint at a future Midnight Sons film – it’s probably a good thing that won’t happen. Avengers: Doomsday already has a lot going on, juggling several superhero teams, continuing storylines for established characters, and introducing Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The directors, known for handling large casts in films like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, are skilled at this, but adding Ghost Rider to the mix might overcomplicate things, even for them.
With the introduction of Doctor Doom in Doomsday, the film needs to quickly establish him as a compelling character. Unlike Thanos, who had years of build-up, Doom doesn’t have that advantage, so the movie will need to dedicate significant screen time to his backstory and development, not just in Doomsday but also setting up his role in Avengers: Secret Wars. The same goes for the X-Men; even though familiar actors are playing them, these are new versions of the characters, and the film needs to introduce viewers to their place in the Marvel universe. It’s essentially a fresh start for these iconic mutants.
Even if the Doomsday movie ends up being over three hours long, introducing another major character like Ghost Rider would be difficult with so much focus on Doctor Doom, the X-Men, and existing MCU storylines. It’s better to hold off on Ghost Rider’s introduction and give him a more substantial role later, similar to how Halle Berry feels about returning as Storm – there will be future opportunities for Marvel to use him effectively.
If Ghost Rider doesn’t appear in Doomsday, there’s still a good chance he’ll show up in Secret Wars. It’s likely some heroes will fall in Doomsday while fighting Doctor Doom, creating opportunities for new characters to join the team. This could be a great way to introduce Ghost Rider, giving him a more significant role without competing for attention. It will be fascinating to see how things develop. While fans want to see Ghost Rider in a movie again, it might be best to save him for a project like Midnight Sons, where he can be a central character instead of a minor one in a massive story.
