Nioh 3 lets you keep your preferred weapons useful throughout the game, even ones you find early on, thanks to the Familiarity system. This system involves earning experience points specifically for the weapon you’re currently using, and it offers benefits beyond just improving stats.
This guide is all about raising weapon Familiarity, and how to do it quickly, in Nioh 3.
How To Raise Weapon Familiarity
You’ll find a Familiarity meter under each weapon’s name when you check your Equipment. It starts at zero and fills up as you attack enemies and deal damage – you don’t even need to defeat them! To quickly increase a weapon’s Familiarity, it’s best to find a tough enemy with a lot of health and practice on them, instead of spending time running around and defeating many weaker enemies.
The Battle Scroll will be a great resource for farming Familiarity for each of your weapons.
Why Raise Weapon Familiarity
Increasing a weapon’s Familiarity not only kept its stats competitive for a time, but also boosted the amount of souls you got from it. You don’t need to fully fill the Familiarity meter – even reaching 5% significantly increases the Amrita earned.
You can easily see how weapon familiarity affects soul earnings. Open the Offer menu and, with a weapon at 0% Familiarity, note the ‘Amrita Earned’ number in the bottom-right. Then, deal damage to enemies until the weapon’s Familiarity reaches about 5-10%. Check the ‘Amrita Earned’ value again – you’ll notice a substantial increase.
Honestly, after maxing out a weapon’s Familiarity, I’ve found that continuing to level it up doesn’t give you enough extra Amrita to really be worth the grind. The only real benefit at that point is unlocking the Crucible Art – that’s when it becomes worthwhile, in my experience.
A key benefit of increasing a weapon’s Familiarity, even if you don’t plan to keep it, is unlocking its Crucible Art. Once unlocked, you can discard the weapon and find the Art under ‘Customize Martial Arts,’ letting you use it with any other weapon of the same type. This is especially useful because only weapons earned through the Crucible initially have locked Crucible Arts.
That is everything about farming weapon Familiarity and the benefits from doing so, in Nioh 3.
