GOAT?
These days, “GOAT” usually stands for Greatest Of All Time. But the new movie Goat is about a literal goat named Will Harris (played by Caleb McLaughlin) who dreams of becoming the best. As a kid, Will was inspired by watching his local “roarball” team, the Thorns – a fast-paced, extreme version of basketball – and their star player, Jett, a powerful panther (played by Gabrielle Union). Years later, however, Will finds himself working as a delivery driver, struggling with rent, and realizing that as a small goat, he doesn’t quite measure up to the rhinos, giraffes, and other massive creatures dominating the roarball scene.
That GOAT story…
Everything changes when a video of Will easily defeating a professional player named Mane – a large, intimidating competitor with a tough attitude – goes viral. Flo, the flamboyant owner of the Thorns team, sees the video and, hoping to boost her team’s appeal to potential buyers, recruits Will. This causes friction with the existing players, but Will is determined to prove he deserves to be there and is just as good, if not better, than everyone else.
Honestly, I’m a sucker for a good underdog story, but this one definitely hits familiar beats – the character proving everyone wrong and ultimately saving the day. What I really appreciated, though, wasn’t so much about Will becoming a legend. It was more about his passion and how he managed to reignite the team’s spirit. And you know what? That’s a pretty solid message for any movie, really.
The Greats Of All Time?
Following the success of Zootropolis, this new animated film also features animals as its main characters. While it doesn’t quite reach the same level as the Oscar-nominated Zootropolis, it stands out thanks to its beautiful and unique animation style. The backgrounds are reminiscent of impressionist paintings, and the various roarball courts – designed with ice, fire, jungle, and other exciting environments – are incredibly detailed. Each animal character is well-developed and memorable, brought to life by a strong voice cast including Nick Kroll, David Harbour, Patton Oswalt, and Jennifer Hudson. Like the social media it depicts, the movie moves very quickly, even though the story itself is fairly predictable.
