For Angelina Jolie, scars are an eternal reminder of her journey through life.
The Academy Award-winning actress is comfortable with the scars from her 2013 double mastectomy. She had the surgery after discovering she carried a gene that significantly raised her risk of developing breast cancer.
In a recent interview with France Inter radio, she explained that she’s always been fascinated by the experiences that shape people, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the marks those experiences leave behind. She’s not interested in portraying a flawless or unrealistic version of life; she prefers stories that acknowledge the realities of hardship and resilience.
The 50-year-old, who has six children – Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 19, and 17-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne – with her former partner Brad Pitt, explained that the scars from her double mastectomy will always remind her of her decision to prioritize her health so she could be with her children for as long as possible.
Angelina shared that she felt thankful to be able to take control of her health, especially because her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, passed away from breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. She explained that losing her mother at a young age meant her children wouldn’t have a grandmother.
According to the Eternals star, a life without mistakes or scars isn’t a life fully lived. They believe that making messes and learning from errors are essential parts of a meaningful existence.
In December, Angelina revealed the scars from her double mastectomy, explaining to Time France after a photoshoot that she shared them with many women she cared about.
“I’m always moved when I see other women share theirs,” she continued. “I wanted to join them.”

The actress, known for her role in Salt, also explained her decision to publicly share her experience with a double mastectomy. She wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times in 2013 to encourage people to make well-informed decisions about their own health.
Angelina emphasized that every woman deserves the right to control her own healthcare and have the necessary information to make sound decisions. She believes healthcare choices should be deeply personal, and women need both information and support to make them.
