5 Fantasy Movie Sequels We’re Still Waiting to See After Years

There are plenty of good fantasy films available. Classics like The Lord of the Rings immediately spring to mind, and we have a wide range of options, from Labyrinth and A Monster Calls to The Green Knight. However, many other fantasy movies felt rushed or unfinished, and could have been expanded into amazing prequel or sequel stories.

Most movies are designed to be one-time events, but certain films have stories rich enough to support a whole series. The movies listed here, whether they were critical failures or eventual successes, all share one thing: a lot of unrealized potential. With the right creative team, they could be successfully expanded into sequels or even prequels.

5) Warcraft

Though the movie Warcraft wasn’t a commercial success, it was surprisingly enjoyable despite receiving poor reviews (only 29% on Rotten Tomatoes). The film, based on the popular World of Warcraft game, centers around Gul’dan, an orc shaman who uses dark magic to open a gateway to the human world of Azeroth. He unites the orc clans into a conquering force known as the Horde, prompting the humans – including King Llane, the warrior Anduin Lothar, and the wizard Medivh – to defend their home. As the conflict unfolds, both sides start to wonder if peace is possible. While the story might work better as a TV series, the vastness of the World of Warcraft universe offers huge potential for sequels, particularly by focusing on new characters and expanding the lore for fans of the game.

4) The Princess Bride

Many consider The Princess Bride to be one of the greatest fantasy movies ever made, thanks to its wonderful cast and enchanting, fairy tale-like story. The film follows Buttercup and her true love, Westley, who are torn apart but reunited when Buttercup is forced to marry the cruel Prince Humperdink. It’s a genuinely heartfelt and imaginative movie, and the author of the original novel, William Goldman, once planned a sequel. Sadly, he passed away before he could write it. However, a continuation of The Princess Bride still feels possible – with the right creative team who truly appreciate the story. A prequel exploring Westley’s time as the Dread Pirate Roberts, or a sequel following Buttercup and Westley’s adventures after their reunion, both hold exciting potential.

3) Treasure Planet

Blending science fiction and fantasy, Treasure Planet is a truly special film that never received the recognition it deserved. Released in 2002 with a fantastic cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Martin Short, and Emma Thompson, the movie follows young Jim Hawkins as he discovers a map to a legendary treasure. What unfolds is a touching and relatable story of growing up, complete with all the emotional ups and downs. Its animation style was groundbreaking, seamlessly combining futuristic and fantastical elements in a fresh way. Disney actually began developing a sequel, but unfortunately, the film didn’t perform well enough at the box office. It’s a shame, because there was so much potential to continue Jim’s adventure in a meaningful and creative way, without simply trying to make more money.

2) Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

Beyond just needing a sequel, the 2009 movie Cirque du Freak deserves a complete remake. The film tries to cover the first three books of the eleven-book Saga of Darren Shan series, which follows teenager Darren as he becomes a half-vampire and the assistant to vampire Larten Crepsley after a strange circus visit. The series is a wild, imaginative young adult story, but it also has a unique, dark sense of humor. With so much material to work with across eleven books, a new adaptation could really do the series justice, either by continuing the story or starting fresh with a completely revamped version.

1) Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Any list of desired sequels has to include a request for another Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie. It’s the perfect film for fans of the tabletop role-playing game, capturing everything we love about D&D. Released in 2023, the movie earned a fantastic 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to great performances from Chris Pine and the cast, and because it’s simply a really enjoyable film. The story follows a charming bard and his ragtag group of adventurers as they attempt an ambitious heist to recover a lost artifact. Naturally, things don’t go as planned – it is D&D, after all! The world of the Forgotten Realms is huge, offering endless possibilities for a sequel. Just pick a location and run with it (but please, let’s see a tiefling with more than just horns this time around!).
