It looks as though the police’s biggest lead in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has yielded no fruit.
According to MS NOW, citing police sources, the man who was briefly detained and questioned by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI on February 10th has been released.
The person was arrested in Rio Rico, a small town about 60 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, because they looked similar to someone caught on security cameras released by police earlier that day. This is the location where Nancy was last seen.
According to NBC News, the man said his name is Carlos Palazuelos. He told Telemundo that police searched his house after they took him into custody. He also stated that a search warrant was used, and the search caused damage to both his front and back doors.
On February 11th, the Pima Sheriff’s Department announced that investigators had finished searching a property in Rio Rico as part of the ongoing Nancy Guthrie investigation. They stated that no further information is available at this time.
The newly released camera footage and photos represent a significant breakthrough in the case of the missing 84-year-old. Before this, officials had stated they hadn’t found any potential suspects.
Officials explained the delay of over a week in accessing the footage was due to it being recovered from leftover data stored in their internal systems.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated to TopMob News that the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have spent the last eight days working with private companies to find any lost, damaged, or unviewable photos and videos from Nancy Guthrie’s home. This effort includes trying to recover data potentially lost when recording devices were removed.
Even though the release was delayed, Nancy’s family, including her daughter Savannah Guthrie, were encouraged by it and saw it as a positive development.

The Today show co-anchor shared photos from the video and wrote, “We think she’s still alive. Please bring her home.”
Savannah shared the video, along with the FBI tip line, after her siblings, Annie and Camron Guthrie – who have been featured in previous posts by the TV anchor – first posted it.
She wrote in a post on February 11th, asking if anyone recognized the person in the photo. She believes this person is still missing and pleaded for their safe return home.

Nancy Guthrie, mother to Annie, Camron, and Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, around 9:30 p.m. on January 31st, according to the Pima County police.

Police confirmed to Today that Nancy, 84, was reported missing by her family on February 1st. A friend became worried when Nancy didn’t attend church that morning and let her family know. After searching her property for about an hour, her children contacted the authorities around noon to report her disappearance.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later explained the first steps investigators took at the victim’s home, including the work of homicide detectives.
We don’t usually involve the sheriff in situations like this, but the details coming from the house are deeply troubling,” he said at a press conference on February 2nd. “This case was particularly unusual based on what officers reported and what we discovered at the scene.
This isn’t how things usually work,” Nanos explained. “Normally, our homicide detectives are called out when there’s a death, a body to investigate. In this case, we sent them based solely on what the surveyors reported.

After looking into what happened, officials said they think a crime occurred at Nancy’s house.
During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos stated that investigators now believe they have identified a crime scene after processing the location. He asked for the public’s assistance, noting the community has a history of helping solve difficult cases and he hoped they would do so again.
The sheriff pointed out that Nancy had trouble getting around – she couldn’t walk even a short distance on her own – which led him to suspect something wasn’t right about her disappearance.
He stated definitively that she didn’t simply leave on her own, emphasizing, “There’s evidence at the location suggesting she didn’t leave voluntarily.”

The search for Nancy is still ongoing, and officials are concerned because she needs daily medication to stay healthy, and she likely doesn’t have it with her.
During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos explained that an 84-year-old woman is facing serious health problems and urgently needs medication. Without it within 24 hours, her condition could become life-threatening.
We’re asking anyone with information about this – if you’ve seen or heard anything, please contact us. Call 911. We don’t want another tragedy, and we need the public’s help.
As many of you know, Nancy hasn’t been feeling her best physically lately. But I want to assure you, her mind is still incredibly sharp! We’ve been focusing on activities that really keep her cognitive skills engaged, and it’s wonderful to see how strong she remains mentally. It’s a beautiful reminder that our minds can stay vibrant even as our bodies change.
According to Nanos, Nancy Guthrie is mentally alert and this isn’t related to dementia. She’s very sharp and aware. The family wants to emphasize that she didn’t simply wander off, and any physical limitations are simply due to her age.
With the search for Nancy still underway, Nanos expressed his wish for her to come home safely.
“I hope we find her safe and sound,” he emphasized, “but we cannot ignore what’s in front of us.”

The day after Nancy was reported missing, the anchor of the Today show publicly shared how difficult this time is for her family.
Speaking for my family, I want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts, prayers, and messages we’ve received,” she told NBC’s morning show on February 2nd. “Our top priority right now is bringing Nancy home safely.
She expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts in the investigation and asked anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Once Savannah Guthrie learned her mother, Nancy, had been reported missing, her colleagues on the Today show quickly voiced their support.
Jenna Bush Hager shared on the February 2nd episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle that she is personally friends with Nancy and has a lot of affection for her.
She continued, saying they were thinking of Savannah and her family and sending their prayers to everyone affected.
Meanwhile, Sheinelle Jones emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time.
She felt the show truly showcased the community at its finest when it asked viewers to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s department with any information related to the case, even if it seemed insignificant.
She added, “So we’re sending our prayers but we’re also sending our collective action.”
Before concluding the segment, both hosts continued, “We love you, Savannah.”

And Sunday Today anchor Willie Geist also urged fans to keep an eye out for Nancy.
On February 2nd, he posted on Instagram asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona. He also included the relevant phone number, stating she was missing.
Savannah’s former colleague, Hoda Kotb, also responded to the surprising announcement. She shared a heartwarming photo of Savannah and Nancy together on the Today show set. In a simple Instagram post on February 2nd, Hoda included only a red heart and praying hands emoji.

Police have labeled Nancy’s home in Arizona a crime scene, but they don’t think the public needs to be concerned for their safety.
At a press conference on February 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated he didn’t believe there was an immediate danger, but cautioned that the investigation was ongoing and much work remained.
Savannah hasn’t appeared on Today since February 1st, when her mother was reported missing. However, local authorities have been checking in with her to ensure her well-being.
The sheriff confirmed they had spoken with her. Her security team has been communicating with them all night, but they aren’t ruling anything out at this point.

On Feb. 2, Pima County police shared a series of updates on the timeline of Nancy’s disappearance.
Investigators now think the woman was likely taken from her home against her will, perhaps while she was sleeping, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson on February 2nd. Detectives are investigating the possibility that she was kidnapped.

After news broke that Nancy might have been taken from her home in Arizona while she was sleeping, Savannah made a heartfelt plea.
In a recent Instagram post on February 2nd, she shared her beliefs, writing that she and others find strength in prayer, unity, love, and hope. She expressed a deep faith in goodness, humanity, and, most importantly, in God.
Oh my gosh, Savannah just spoke, and it broke my heart! She was thanking everyone for praying for her mom, Nancy, and she described her as someone with such strong beliefs, a truly good person. And then she asked us to keep praying, to really believe our prayers are lifting Nancy right now. It’s just…everything. I’m praying so hard!
She added, “we need you.”
To conclude her plea, Savannah shared a Bible verse from Isaiah.
She shared a verse from Isaiah, writing, ‘He will keep those with steadfast hearts and unwavering trust in the Lord in perfect peace.’ She believed this message held timeless wisdom for everyone.
Savannah continued, “Bring her home.”

Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that DNA evidence was discovered at Nancy’s home, which is now being treated as a crime scene.
We collected samples and are hoping they contain enough DNA to help us identify what we’re looking for, he told NBC News in a report on Today on February 3rd.
At a press conference held two days after Nancy went missing, Nanos explained what happened leading up to her disappearance.
According to Nanos, the doorbell camera stopped working at 1:47 a.m., just about four hours after she got back from a family visit, as she explained in a press conference on February 5th.
The software identified someone at the door, but the video was automatically deleted because Nancy didn’t have a paid subscription. However, the representative assured her they were still working to recover the footage.
The sheriff explained that Nancy’s pacemaker app lost connection with her phone at 2:28 a.m. The family found her missing at 11:56 a.m., and 911 was called to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department just three minutes later, at 12:03 p.m.
About ten minutes after receiving the call, he explained that patrol teams would arrive, assess the situation, and begin a response involving both search and rescue and detectives from different units.

On February 4th, Savannah, Camron, and Annie read letters hoping to secure their mother’s safe return, addressing them to both their mom and anyone who might be holding her.
In a video posted to Instagram, the family said they’re doing everything possible and are willing to communicate. They emphasized the prevalence of manipulated media and stated they need absolute confirmation that their loved one is alive and in the possession of those they’re communicating with.
My mom is the center of our world and our safe place. Her health is very delicate, and she’s constantly in pain. Right now, she doesn’t have the medication she desperately needs to stay alive and feel better.
The next day, Camron confirmed in a separate video that the family was still “waiting for contact.”
We’re asking whoever has our mother to please contact us. We haven’t received any direct communication, and we need to be able to talk to them so we can start resolving this situation.
During a press conference on February 5th, FBI special agent Heith Janke announced the arrest of Derrick Callella from California. Callella is accused of sending false texts as part of an attempt to profit from the situation—described as a complete fraud. Authorities are also investigating a detailed ransom letter shared with TMZ and are taking the threat very seriously. Callella has not yet entered a plea and was released on a $20,000 bond.
However, he noted, the Guthrie family was “still waiting for communication.”

Okay, so February 7th was insane. The day the authorities finally admitted to searching Annie’s place in Arizona – they tried to play it cool, saying it was ‘routine,’ yeah right – Savannah posted another video on Instagram! It was like, totally hinting that whatever we’d been hoping for, whatever we’d asked for, had actually happened. I swear, she’s sending us signals, and I’m decoding them all!
Speaking while holding hands with Camron and Annie, she said, “We got your message and we understand what you’re saying. Please, just bring our mother back so we can celebrate with her. That’s all we ask, and it’s the only thing that will bring us peace.”
And if her intentions weren’t clear, Savannah added, “This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

Investigators released photos of a person of interest in the case on February 10th.
Footage from a security camera on Nancy’s property shows a person wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack walking up to the house. The individual then appears to punch the camera, damaging it. Police had previously noted the camera was broken when they arrived at the scene.
For the past eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been collaborating with private companies to find any lost, damaged, or hidden images and videos from Nancy Guthrie’s home. This effort was necessary because recording devices had been removed. They were able to recover the video from data still stored on the systems’ servers, according to a statement provided to TopMob News.
“Working with our partners,” the note continued, “law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”
