Isekai is a hugely popular type of anime, and some of the best series are exclusive to Crunchyroll. This genre has evolved a lot since its beginnings, but the basic concept remains the same: characters are transported from their normal lives to a completely new and fantastical world. While these alternate worlds vary in their details and atmosphere, they’re almost always drastically different from Earth.

Isekai anime is incredibly diverse – it can be a power fantasy, a dark and gritty story, or just a lighthearted adventure. Every new series is a bit of a gamble, but some have become hugely popular on Crunchyroll, growing into multi-season franchises. You can learn more about these successful shows below.

She realizes she’s been reborn into a romance game she used to play, but this time as the villainess – a character fated to die.

Desperate to survive, she wins over everyone around her with her kindness and charm. It’s an enjoyable and lighthearted story, lacking in serious suspense.

6). Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!

The anime Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!, based on Osamu Nishi’s work, offers a fresh take on the popular Isekai genre without relying on high-stakes conflict. Instead of being reborn in a fantasy world, the main character, Iruma-kun, is surprisingly sold to a powerful demon by his parents. While this could be a grim beginning, the story quickly turns positive, opening up a fantastic new life for Iruma-kun.

This anime follows a character who attends a school for demons and unexpectedly finds a sense of belonging. He enjoys a relatively peaceful and fulfilling school life, making it a simple and enjoyable isekai series.

5). Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World

Unlike some other isekai series, *Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World created by Tappei Nagatsuki and Shinichirou Otsuka, isn’t a light and breezy watch. After repeatedly experiencing horrific deaths and being stuck in a time loop, Subaru learns and grows with each attempt, ultimately becoming the hero he envisioned. Set in a complex world with multiple contenders for the throne and a constantly evolving landscape, this series is definitely worth watching.

4). Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-

Thankfully, Kei Azumi and Mitsuaki Matsumoto’s *Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy isn’t as overwhelmingly dramatic as some other stories, though it still features plenty of action. The story has a unique premise: Makoto’s parents came from another fantasy world, but he doesn’t resemble them and isn’t considered handsome. When he’s transported to this new world, the goddess deems him too unattractive to be a hero and abandons him in a perilous area.

Makoto receives power from the god Tsukuyomi, which makes him incredibly strong and earns him the respect of other creatures. He now wants to create a world free of prejudice, where everyone is accepted regardless of their appearance, and he’s using his newfound strength to achieve this. While his mission sounds ambitious, his approach is surprisingly laid-back.

3). Ascendance of a Bookworm

For a truly relaxing isekai anime, look no further than Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki and You Shiina. The story follows Urano, a college student in Japan who dreams of becoming a librarian. After tragically dying in an earthquake, she’s reborn into a weak body in a fantasy world. Discovering that books are a luxury only the wealthy can afford, she uses her knowledge and skills from her previous life to work towards her lifelong goal of becoming a librarian.

2). Konosuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World

If you’re looking for a hilarious anime, definitely check out Konosuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! It follows Kazuma, who dies and is reborn in a fantasy world as a hero. He decides to bring the goddess who reincarnated him along for the ride, giving him a unique advantage. Together with a delightfully strange magician and knight, they form a quirky team with the ultimate goal of defeating the Devil King… eventually.

This series is a lighthearted parody of other ‘isekai’ shows, never taking itself or its characters too seriously. The main character, Kazuma, is funny because he cares about his friends but avoids effort at all costs. It’s a consistently amusing show built around one comical failure after another.

1). That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Crunchyroll’s That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is arguably the most popular and successful anime in the ‘isekai’ genre. The story follows a businessman who is reborn in a fantasy world as a slime – typically the weakest creature imaginable. However, through training and discovering new skills, Rimuru, the slime, gradually becomes one of the most powerful beings in his new world, and the series is still expanding.
