5 Best Games From No More Heroes Creator Suda51, Ranked

Goichi Suda, known as Suda51, recently released his newest game, Romeo is a Dead. Suda51 is famous for creating unusual but highly engaging games, and he’s been doing so since 1993. His games often leave players delightfully confused, and that’s exactly what he intends! While not all of his games are successes, these five represent his best work so far. Hopefully, he’ll continue to surprise us with more innovative titles before he retires.

This is Suda51’s five best games, ranked from top to bottom.

5) Let It Die

Let It Die is a brutally challenging hack-and-slash game where you attempt to climb a dangerous tower filled with enemies. The combat is already difficult, but some bosses feel unfairly hard. Plus, getting better gear and figuring out how to improve your character takes a lot of effort.

What’s more, when you fall, information about your attempt is used to create challenging opponents – some of the hardest enemies you’ll face are actually based on other players! This game isn’t for everyone, but if you’re brave enough to learn from the relentless “Uncle Death,” you’ll find a uniquely fun and skill-based action experience.

4) Shadows of the Damned

Grasshopper Manufacture, led by Suda, collaborated with Shinji Mikami – creator of the Resident Evil series – to make Shadows of the Damned. They aimed to blend Suda’s energetic, unconventional style with Mikami’s expertise in suspenseful, action-packed horror. Players take on the role of Garcia Hotspur, embarking on a quest to rescue his girlfriend from the Lord of Demons.

Like many games from Suda51, this one really pushes the boundaries with incredibly difficult and frightening boss battles. The collaboration between the two developers was a huge success, blending their unique styles perfectly. This isn’t the only time Suda51 has found success through teamwork. Though it didn’t quite make our top list, Suda51 also worked with James Gunn (known for Guardians of the Galaxy and Peacemaker) to write the script for Lollipop Chainsaw a few years later.

3) The Silver Case

The Silver Case was one of the first games created by Suda and his studio, Grasshopper Manufacture. It’s quite different from the fast-paced action games he later became famous for; instead, it’s a story-driven visual novel with minimal gameplay.

Suda51 is known for telling compelling stories, even if they’re often strange and unusual, and he delivers again with The Silver Case. The game challenges players to solve a series of mysterious murders happening in Tokyo’s Ward 24. It’s definitely an odd experience, but Suda manages to create a captivating mystery that’s truly worth exploring.

2) Killer7

Killer7 is another collaboration from the creative mind behind Grasshopper Studio, Suda51. This time, he worked with producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, known for his work on popular titles like Dino Crisis 2, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil 4. The game blends different styles of gameplay, combining first-person, on-rails shooting with adventure elements reminiscent of Myst to create a unique experience.

I absolutely loved getting to play as the members of Killer7, this group of really unique assassins! What’s so cool is you can switch between them on the fly to figure out puzzles. And honestly, the game’s art style was just mind-blowing for its time – totally classic Suda51. It’s a shame it never really broke into the mainstream, though. Suda51 has hinted at a sequel a few times, but the best we’ve gotten is a remaster back in 2018, which I still play!

1) No More Heroes

No More Heroes is considered Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture’s most significant creation. It was a critical and commercial success on the Wii and launched their flagship series. Since its debut in 2007, there have been four main No More Heroes games, plus one spin-off title.

There’s truly nothing else quite like a game designed by Suda51. Travis Touchdown is his most iconic creation, and even though No More Heroes III didn’t reach the same heights as the original two games, it was still a fantastic title for the Nintendo Switch. Grasshopper Studio initially stated that No More Heroes III would be the last game in the series, but with Suda in charge, anything is possible. While a return to the series seems unlikely, Suda has built his reputation on consistently surprising his fans.
