Andreas Bareiss, a producer not widely known to audiences, has shared that a second season of the popular new Netflix series will only happen if certain conditions are met. The German-language espionage thriller, which premiered on February 5th, has quickly become a hit with viewers. As of today, it’s the #1 TV show on Netflix worldwide. Despite being available for just a few days, people are already wondering if the show will be renewed for another season.
In a recent interview with The Spot, Andreas Bareiss, the producer of Unfamiliar, explained what needs to happen for a second season to be approved. He stated they definitely want to continue the show, but ultimately, whether it gets renewed “depends on the viewers.”
Q: “And of course you want to continue with the series?”
We’re definitely open to that idea, and I think Netflix would likely be interested too. Ultimately, though, it’s up to the audience to decide if it’s something they want.
He explained that while a German-language show needs to connect with German viewers first, they also hope it can find an audience internationally.
Q: “Is the stated goal that the series should also be an international success?”
Andreas Bareiss believes a German-language series should primarily attract viewers in Germany. However, he also hopes a high-quality show like “Unfamiliar” could find international success. He points to the unexpected hit “Barbarians,” which surprisingly topped Netflix charts in Brazil, as an example of how a German series can break through internationally.
This show follows a similar pattern to other popular international Netflix series (such as 2025’s The Glass Dome). Ultimately, Netflix judges a show’s success by how many people watch it, and the creators have plenty of ideas for continuing the story in the future.
Sabine de Mardt from Gaumont, the company that made Unfamiliar, told Deadline they have many ideas for future seasons. She also expressed confidence that viewers will discover and enjoy the show.
We have many ideas for different times of the year. Ultimately, it’s up to the audience to choose, but I believe they’ll make the best decision.
The first season of the German thriller Unfamiliar is now available on Netflix. The series centers on Simon and Meret Schäfer (played by Felix Kramer and Susanne Wolff), a married couple who are former spies forced back into action when their cover is compromised.
This six-part series is one of the many highly anticipated shows Netflix will release this year. You can find more details about Netflix’s upcoming releases here.
Will Unfamiliar Season 2 Happen on Netflix?

Following the release of Season 1 of Unfamiliar, fans are eagerly awaiting news about a potential second season. As of now, a renewal hasn’t been officially announced, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen.
According to the series’ producers, Andreas Bareiss and Sabine de Mardt, the future of the show – whether or not it gets a second season – hinges on how many people watch the first season. Early numbers suggest a promising start.
Netflix’s new series, Unfamiliar, is quickly becoming a big hit, ranking as one of the platform’s most popular shows of the year so far. Only six days after it premiered, the series has reached the number one spot in numerous countries around the world, including Brazil, Greece, and the Netherlands.
It’s still early days – we only have data from the first six days – and things could definitely change, but the show is off to a strong start. If it continues to be popular worldwide for the next few weeks, Netflix will likely approve a second season.
