As a huge fan, I’ve been so excited to hear that Assassin’s Creed is getting another live-action adaptation on Netflix! We’ve been getting glimpses of the cast lately, but I was really hoping for more information about the story itself – where and when it would all take place. Thankfully, that’s finally starting to happen! We’re getting some major details now, and honestly, one piece of information in particular is answering a question I’ve had about the series for a long time.
Thanks to Production Weekly (as reported by What’s On Netflix), we now have the full story outline for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed live-action series. It seems the show will be set in Ancient Rome – a first for the franchise – and will likely address long-standing questions, such as how the Assassins dealt with Nero, how the Great Fire of Rome impacted their organization, and the fate of the Roman Assassins after the events of the series. The official synopsis is available below.
The latest installment in the series takes players to Ancient Rome, a period never before seen in the franchise. The story unfolds during the early years of Emperor Nero’s rule, a time of political maneuvering and growing instability. Nero is consolidating his power, but his advisor, Seneca the Younger, is trying to control the emperor’s increasingly dangerous tendencies. As rumors of corruption and a secret organization surface within Rome’s palaces and public spaces, a new assassin appears. This assassin is tasked with investigating a conspiracy that connects Nero’s rise to power, Seneca’s complicated position, and a shadowy plot that extends throughout the city. Set between 54 and 68 AD, the game explores how tyranny began—and the assassin who could change the course of history.
Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series Could Reveal What Happened To Rome’s Assassins Order

As a long-time fan, I always thought it was interesting that the Assassin’s Creed series hadn’t really delved into Ancient Rome – specifically the years 54 to 68 AD. But it’s not like they’ve never been to Rome! We actually spent a good chunk of time there in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, following Ezio as he battled the Borgias right in their Roman stronghold. It was a fantastic setting, so it’s not a totally new idea for the series to visit the city, just a different era.
A major problem in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is that the Assassin network in Rome has become very weak. Ezio’s main goal is to rebuild it, finding and training new members so they can effectively fight the Borgias and the Templars. The game offers some clues about the Order’s decline, but a new live-action series could provide a more detailed explanation of how and why the Assassins fell into such a difficult position by the time Brotherhood begins.
The new series will likely feature Emperor Nero, a key figure of the period. His reign saw many significant events, including the Great Fire of Rome, which occurred near the end of the series’ timeline. This devastating fire destroyed much of the city, and Nero subsequently built the Domus Aurea palace on the ruins. It’s probable that this historical event will be incorporated into the show’s storyline.
The series will introduce a completely new Assassin, meaning fans shouldn’t expect to see Ezio at all, even in the show’s more imaginative moments. The new Assassin will face complex challenges with shifting alliances and dangerous secrets, and the story hints at a connection between Nero and the Templars.
The Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series currently has no release date.
