Manga has become increasingly popular over the years, and North American comic book companies have definitely noticed. In many cases, manga even sells better than traditional American comics. Fortunately, this competition hasn’t stopped artists from both countries from appreciating each other’s work. For instance, Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, is a big fan of Marvel comics and even created a team-up between his character All Might and Deadpool. To celebrate this crossover between comics and anime, we’ve gathered some great examples of comic book artists drawing anime characters.
7.) Whilce Portacio’s Naruto

Whilce Portacio is a well-known comic book artist who has worked on popular titles for decades. He’s contributed to Marvel’s Uncanny X-Men, Iron Man, The Punisher, and X-Factor, and also worked with Image Comics on Wetworks and Spawn – he was even one of the company’s original founders. A long-time anime enthusiast, Portacio recently had the opportunity to create the cover art for the “Naruto Triple Feature Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray set, which features three films centered around the Seventh Hokage and his team. Although his artistic style differs from the original creator, Masashi Kishimoto, Portacio’s work feels perfectly suited to the world of Naruto.
6.) Ryan Ottley’s My Hero Academia
Like Whilce Portacio’s fondness for the world of Naruto, Invincible artist Ryan Ottley is a big fan of My Hero Academia. Ottley has become a prominent comic book artist, known for his work on Invincible and titles like The Amazing Spider-Man and Hulk. He recently had the opportunity to draw characters like All Might and Endeavor for a special My Hero Academia comic released in France. Now back in the Invincible universe with the Battle Beast series, Ottley continues to set a high standard for superhero art, both in comics and for anime-inspired works.
5.) Peach Momoko’s One Piece

Peach Momoko is a popular artist, especially known to Marvel fans for her work on Ultimate X-Men, where she reimagined the X-Men. Like other artists such as Whilce Portacio and Ryan Ottley, she was given the opportunity to create official artwork for a beloved anime series. Momoko contributed to the One Piece Card Game, creating her own versions of characters like Nami, Trafalgar Law, Boa Hancock, Black Maria, and Yamato. Given the global popularity of this One Piece card game, Momoko’s artwork of the Straw Hats has become a hit at tournaments and is expected to continue appearing in many more events.

Marco Checchetto has become a prominent artist at Marvel, recently gaining recognition for his work on Ultimate Spider-Man. He’s also illustrated popular titles like The Punisher, Old Man Hawkeye, Daredevil, and Venom. A fan of the Berserk manga, Checchetto was commissioned to create a variant cover for the 42nd volume released in Italy. This volume held special significance as it was the first published after the death of Berserk creator Kentaro Miura, marking the beginning of Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga’s continuation of the series, and Checchetto contributed his artistic vision to this somber chapter.
3.) Jim Chung’s My Neighbor Totoro

Although many anime-inspired artworks lean towards action-packed stories or darker themes, there’s always a place for the gentle magic of Studio Ghibli. Artist Jim Cheung recently created a beautiful piece based on My Neighbor Totoro. Cheung is a well-known comic book artist, having contributed to major titles like New Avengers, Young Avengers, Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men, X-Force for Marvel, and Justice League, Year of The Villain, and Legion of Super-Heroes for DC Comics. Despite being very different from typical superhero stories, Cheung’s artistic style perfectly captures the spirit of Totoro.
2.) Chris Samnee’s Vampire Hunter D
Chris Samnee is a hugely popular artist in the comic book industry, having worked with almost all the major companies. He’s become well-known for his work on Marvel characters like Deadpool, Thor, Black Widow, and Captain America, and has also illustrated DC heroes including Superman, Batman, and the Justice League. Although Samnee often draws a variety of characters, his recent piece featuring Vampire Hunter D is particularly noteworthy. Vampire Hunter D is a beloved anime character who fans have been hoping to see revived, and it’s clear the character made a strong impression on Samnee, as reflected in his artwork.
1.) Jim Lee’s Dragon Ball Z

Many fans consider Dragon Ball Z to be the best of its kind in the Shonen anime genre, and Jim Lee’s artwork is similarly highly regarded in the world of superhero comics. Lee began his career working on titles like Uncanny X-Men, but he later co-founded Image Comics and is now the President of DC Comics. This particular piece showcases Lee’s take on Son Goku, the strongest fighter from Dragon Ball, and it’s the only time he’s ever illustrated the anime character.
