It’s unusual for a TV show to get better after changing its core idea, but it happens. More often, attempts to revamp a series actually hurt its quality. A compelling initial concept can really drive a show’s success – think of Lost, Severance, and Pluribus, which all stood out thanks to their original and captivating ideas. Sometimes, that strong start is enough to sustain a show for years. But when a series begins to falter, it may need to change direction and try something new.
Shows like Supernatural and The Good Place are really skilled at changing things up and keeping the story fresh. However, not all shows manage this well. Some fail because their changes feel out of character, become predictable, or happen too late in the series. For example, a vampire show that declined in quality after its main character became a vampire, or a CW mystery that lost its way, demonstrate how easily reinvention can go wrong.
5) The Vampire Diaries

The series The Vampire Diaries begins when Elena Gilbert learns there’s a hidden supernatural world in her town. The show then follows her as she deals with the fact that vampires, werewolves, and witches are real – and many of them are interested in her. The early seasons expertly blend supernatural mysteries with typical teen drama, making for a really engaging watch. However, the show changes course when Elena becomes a vampire at the end of season three. From that point on, it never quite recaptures its initial appeal, losing its strong moral compass and damaging its most compelling relationships. Combined with cast changes, including Nina Dobrev’s departure, the show constantly tries new directions until the very end, but unfortunately, these changes don’t succeed.
4) Scrubs

Despite being a consistently funny medical show, Scrubs falters with its ninth season. While Season 8 provides a satisfying conclusion, Season 9 feels like a completely different show – not quite a spin-off, but a major shift in focus. Instead of following experienced doctors, it centers on medical students, creating an awkward mix of old and new characters that doesn’t quite work. The show tries to reinvent itself, but ultimately fails to deliver a cohesive experience.
3) The 100

The first five seasons of The 100 follow a group of space colonists who return to Earth almost a hundred years after a nuclear disaster, struggling to survive and clashing with the people who already live there. The show on The CW focuses on their efforts to create a fragile peace, which ultimately leads them to leave Earth again in the Season 5 finale. While the series continues, it shifts gears, with Clarke and her companions discovering a new planet and facing new obstacles. However, the show quickly becomes more fantastical, incorporating elements like time travel and losing the realistic, character-driven focus that made the earlier seasons so compelling.
2) Once Upon a Time

The show Once Upon a Time starts with Emma Swan trying to lift a curse on the town of Storybrooke, Maine. It’s a lighthearted fantasy series that features beloved fairy tale characters. However, the show changed direction in Season 7, introducing a new curse even after Emma had already succeeded and found happiness. This reboot wasn’t as successful, and the show lost some of its original charm. It became repetitive and confusing, which likely contributed to its cancellation. It’s disappointing that the series didn’t end after its strong sixth season.
1) Riverdale

As a big fan of teen dramas, I initially loved Riverdale. It started as this really intriguing, slightly quirky murder mystery in a small town – a little over-the-top at times, sure, but in a fun way. The first season was all about the characters trying to figure out who did it, and it felt pretty realistic. But honestly, things went completely off the rails after that! They started throwing in everything you can imagine – magic, alternate universes… It could have been interesting if they’d kept a consistent tone, but it just felt all over the place. That’s why Riverdale got such a reputation for being… well, a bit crazy. The show really changed its whole premise after the first couple of seasons.
