This contest is a clever way to build excitement for Mortal Kombat II on social media – ideally reaching trending status right before the new trailer is released. The prize – letting a fan introduce the trailer – won’t affect how well the trailer does, but it will give that fan a memorable experience they’ll want to share with their friends. If this campaign works well, the studio can easily use the same idea to promote similar projects in the future.
Karl Urban, known for his role in The Boys, will play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II. The film follows Cage as he’s drawn into a dangerous tournament to protect Earth from the forces of Outworld, led by the ruthless Shao Kahn (played by Martyn Ford). The sequel is adding several popular characters from the Mortal Kombat games, including Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), and Quan Chi (Damon Herriman). Returning cast members include Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Noob Saiboot (a new role for the actor), and Max Huang as Kung Lao, among others.
Mortal Kombat II comes out on April 23rd and is rated R for intense violence, gore, and some language. Join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
