Despite skipping traditional movie theaters, KPop Demon Hunters was the most popular film of 2025. The group HUNTR/X became a global phenomenon, but Sony made the decision to let Netflix distribute the film, a deal that was originally made during the pandemic. A follow-up movie is now being planned, though it’s still in the initial stages of development.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville shared early news about a sequel. They explained that development is just beginning due to the current awards season. However, de Froberville hinted at potential storylines, noting the vast possibilities within the film’s world – including the demons, the pop star aspect, and what happened to the character Jinu. He believes there’s plenty of room to build upon these elements.
The team discussed how KPop Demon Hunters 2 could be similar to the Spider-Verse movies, hoping to build a bigger world with even better animation – which is already quite good. However, they both believe the project will take a significant amount of time. The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that a rumored 2029 release date seems unrealistic, and Belson confirmed that assessment.
Quality Animations Take Time To Make
While it’s understandably frustrating to wait, it’s logical that KPop Demon Hunters 2 will take a while to create. The first movie was in development for two years before finally coming out last year. Because expectations are high, the team needs time to perfect the story, music, and animation. This is especially true if they want to build on the original film by delving deeper into Korean mythology, exploring the changes the climax brought to the HUNTR/X girls, and uncovering more about Jinu’s story.
De Froberville specifically hinted at the importance of Jinu’s actions. At the end of the first film, Jinu proved he had a soul by sacrificing himself to save Rumi, which goes against everything the Hunters believe. Traditionally, they kill demons, but Jinu’s redemption shows that demons can be saved. It will be interesting to see if this changes how the Hunters approach their work in the future.
Sony and Netflix are committed to keeping the HUNTR/X franchise popular, and that includes a wide variety of products, from action figures to even LEGO sets inspired by KPop Demon Hunters. The future of HUNTR/X looks bright, but fans will need to be patient for its official comeback.
