Fantasy novels are often long series, but some standalone books have become truly classic in a shorter amount of space—and many deserve top ratings. It’s challenging to create a fantasy story with a rich world, interesting characters, and a gripping plot. Usually, it takes several books to fully develop all these elements.
It’s especially remarkable when a single fantasy novel manages to create a fully realized and satisfying story. The best ones build intricate worlds, compelling characters, and well-developed magic systems without feeling rushed. These books stay with you long after you finish reading, often prompting you to revisit them. From timeless classics like Tolkien’s work to more recent independent publications exploring difficult themes, these standalones are all highly rated and stand out as exceptional stories.
5) The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Hobbit is a beloved classic in the fantasy genre. While it’s part of the same world as J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, it tells a complete story that stands perfectly well on its own. Tolkien’s writing is beautifully done, even within the limited scope of Bilbo’s journey. The book manages to balance moments of darkness and tension with a cozy, lighthearted feel. Even after nearly a century, it’s still an enjoyable read—and a much easier one than The Lord of the Rings. It remains memorable thanks to its whimsical nature and heartfelt story.
4) The Princess Bride by William Goldman

Many people know and love The Princess Bride, especially the popular 1980s movie. But the original 1973 novel by William Goldman is just as fantastic, and in some ways, even better. While the central love story remains the same, the book has a sharper, more sarcastic edge than the film, which makes it easy to enjoy on its own merits. Like other great fantasy stories, it’s full of adventure and features memorable, well-developed characters. The novel’s unique storytelling style, which includes commentary about the story itself, is particularly clever and makes it a truly five-star read.
3) The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus is a beloved fantasy novel for good reason. Despite being a single, self-contained story, it’s incredibly impactful. Published in 2011, the book boasts a beautifully detailed and immersive setting, brought to life by Morgenstern’s poetic writing style – making it a perfect book to revisit. The story follows Celia and Marco, two competing magicians who fall in love, and their dynamic is particularly captivating. While the setting often takes center stage, the plot and characters work together seamlessly. Once you enter Le Cirque des Rêves, you won’t want to step back into reality. It’s surprising that such a visually rich and imaginative book hasn’t been adapted into a film yet.
2) The Spear Cuts Through Water

Simon Jiminez’s The Spear Cuts Through Water is a truly original fantasy novel, and easily one of the best to be published in the last ten years. While the story—about a god trying to dismantle a cruel government—is interesting, it’s how the story is told that makes this book special. The unique narrative style, which incorporates elements like plays and spoken storytelling, immediately sets it apart as a modern classic. Beyond the inventive presentation, the writing is beautiful and the central romance is deeply engaging. It’s a nearly flawless book, and well deserving of a five-star rating.
1) The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

Both The Sword of Kaigen and Blood Over Bright Haven are excellent books that can be enjoyed on their own, but The Sword of Kaigen has earned more recognition over time, partly because it was published in 2018. Set in an empire of warriors who control water and ice, the story follows a mother and son and reveals the truths about their world as an invasion approaches. This impactful novel tackles difficult topics like trauma and violence, and powerfully portrays female anger. With well-developed characters and a richly imagined setting, it packs a lot into a single book and stands out as one of the best fantasy novels of the last decade.
