Sony Pictures is ending a long-standing problem with its Spider-Man movies. After over ten years, they’re moving away from a disappointing pattern with the new live-action Spider-Noir series, and the first trailer and release date have just been revealed.
The upcoming Spider-Noir series, starring Nicolas Cage, is a first for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which started with the 2018 film Venom. This show is unique because it’s the first TV series in the universe, taking place in its own separate reality within the Spider-Verse. It’s also the first live-action Spider-Man project led by a Spider-Person variant that Sony has produced on its own in twelve years.
Besides The MCU, Sony Pictures Hasn’t Had A Live-Action Project Starring Spider-Man Since 2014
I can’t believe it’s been so long! If you take away the fantastic Spider-Man movies Sony made with Marvel – you know, the ones starring Tom Holland and the incredible Spider-Verse animated films – the last time Sony really put Spider-Man front and center in a live-action movie was way back in 2014 with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It feels like ages ago!
It’s been 12 years since the last major Spider-Man film led by the core hero, a long time for such a popular character and the “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe” franchise. The movies Sony has released within that universe in the meantime – including the Venom trilogy, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter – have received very mixed reactions from audiences.
Although the Venom films did reasonably well at the box office, the overall plan for Sony’s Spider-Man universe has always seemed a bit scattered, especially since Spider-Man himself hasn’t been a major part of it. Luckily, Spider-Noir – a 1930s take on the character played by Nicolas Cage – is poised to change that. Cage previously voiced Spider-Man in the animated Spider-Verse films, so this feels like a natural progression.
Spider-Noir Looks Incredibly Promising For Sony Pictures
To top it all off, the new Spider-Noir series seems really promising, judging by its first trailer.
Sony seems poised for a big success with its new animated series, which captures the dark and stylish feel of the Spider-Noir comics. Both the black-and-white and color versions look fantastic, and the final scene of Spider-Noir swinging through the city is sure to draw in Spider-Man fans when the show starts streaming in May.
Now that Spider-Noir is in the works, along with potential spin-offs featuring Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk, it seems Sony is finally moving forward with its long-planned strategy of expanding the Spider-Man universe beyond the main films.
Spider-Noir is set to begin streaming May 27th on Prime Video and MGM+.
