Batman is a hugely popular figure in pop culture, but his villains are just as crucial to his stories. Over the years, many actors have played Batman in live-action films, each bringing a unique take on the character. As Batman continues to appear in new movies and shows, filmmakers are increasingly putting their own spin on the original comic book stories and characters. While fans often enjoy these new interpretations, they’ve also created a noticeable difference between how Batman is portrayed on screen versus in the DC Comics.
When we look at the most memorable villains in Batman movies, we see a lot of different ways the characters have been brought to life on screen. Often, creating a truly great villain meant making changes from the original comic books. So, while it’s a big achievement to be considered one of the best, here’s a new ranking of the top 7 Batman movie villains, ordered by how faithful they are to their comic book origins.
7) The Riddler (Paul Dano)

Matt Reeves’ The Batman presented a dark and realistic take on Gotham City and its hero, and that extended to a reimagining of the villain. Paul Dano’s Riddler was a stark departure from the comic book version, who is usually flamboyant and obsessed with proving how smart he is. This film’s Riddler was instead portrayed as a reserved, calculating, and disturbed individual, and many consider him one of the best villains ever featured in a Batman movie, even though he differs significantly from his comic book counterpart.
6) Joker (Heath Ledger)

As a huge movie fan, I think Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight is easily one of the best villain performances ever. It’s amazing, but it’s interesting because the character actually deviates quite a bit from the comic books. While the look is fantastic – a really smart change for the movies – Ledger’s Joker felt more unsettling and grimy than the chaotic, traditionally-presented Joker I knew from the comics. It’s a brilliant take, no doubt, but it’s not really the Joker I grew up reading about.
5) Penguin (Danny DeVito)

Tim Burton’s Batman films are distinctive due to their unusual, darkly whimsical style. In Batman Returns, he presented a completely new take on the Penguin – a small, deformed man raised by penguins who exhibits animalistic behaviors. Though a compelling villain, this version differs significantly from the comic books, especially in its portrayal of the Penguin as a resentful outcast living in the sewers, rather than the powerful criminal mastermind he typically is.
4) Ra’s al Ghul (Liam Neeson)

With Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan moved closer to the source material, particularly in how he portrayed Ra’s al Ghul, making him more like the character from the comics. While the film didn’t include the villain’s more outlandish traits, it cleverly reimagined them while staying true to his core personality. The reveal of Ra’s al Ghul was a standout plot twist in DC films, highlighting his dramatic flair and use of trickery, and further demonstrating the film’s commitment to comic book accuracy.
3) Bane (Tom Hardy)

Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bane is sometimes unfairly criticized, but many consider him one of the best villains in Batman films. In The Dark Knight Rises, Bane is incredibly strong physically, but his real power comes from his strategic thinking, allowing him to quickly gain the upper hand against Batman once he arrives in Gotham. While Hardy’s version isn’t as massive as the comic book character—which wouldn’t be realistic anyway—he captures the essence of Bane, particularly the character’s often-overlooked intelligence.
2) Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer)

Many fans consider Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Catwoman in Batman Returns to be the most faithful movie adaptation. Though visually updated with Tim Burton’s signature style, the character still felt true to the comic books, capturing both her cat-like qualities and her role as a compelling, conflicted villain in the Batman universe. Beyond being a strong character on its own, Pfeiffer’s performance really understood what made Catwoman tick in the original stories.
1) Joker (Jack Nicholson)

When people discuss live-action Jokers, Jack Nicholson’s performance is consistently praised. Beyond being a strong portrayal of the character, he’s often considered the most faithful adaptation of the Joker from the comics, while still being a compelling and well-made villain. Nicholson captured both the look and personality of the Joker in a way that felt groundbreaking, creating a truly memorable and disturbing enemy for Batman.
