Steven Spielberg’s Cancelled Too Soon Sci Fi Series is About to Leave Streaming

Steven Spielberg is a filmmaking icon, celebrated for directing blockbuster movies like Schindler’s List, Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. His newest film, Disclosure Day, is coming to theaters this June. Beyond movies, Spielberg has also had a significant career in television, working as both a director and producer on numerous shows. One sci-fi series he worked on, however, was unfortunately cancelled after only one season, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find and watch.

The sci-fi series Extant, starring Halle Berry, will be removed from Netflix on February 18th. Originally airing on CBS between 2014 and 2015, the show followed an astronaut’s return from a year-long solo space mission. Alongside Berry, the cast included Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Michael O’Neill, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (in Season 2). Though critically and popularly well-received, CBS cancelled Extant after two seasons due to falling ratings, expensive production costs, and changes in the storyline. The series was executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

Extant Deserved More Than Two Seasons

Despite arriving during the height of television’s acclaimed period in the 2010s, Extant unfortunately didn’t gain much traction, which is disappointing. The show featured strong acting, especially from Halle Berry who excelled on TV, and it comfortably fit within the landscape of alien science fiction. Though some found it too similar to projects like Ridley Scott’s Alien, it also offered a unique perspective. The first season focused on the family dynamic, with Molly and her husband struggling to conceive before her unexpected return from space pregnant. The reveal that their child was actually an advanced android – a key plot point in season two – added an intriguing layer. While the second season concluded in a way that could have served as a satisfying finale, the series clearly had more stories to tell.

Extant wasn’t the only interesting and well-made series executive produced by Spielberg that didn’t last very long. The Whispers and Minority Report both premiered in 2015 and were canceled after one season. Similarly, Terra Nova and Locke & Key each only lasted a single season back in 2011. Luckily for Extant, it recently found a new audience when it became available on Netflix. Now, with the show leaving the platform soon, it’s a great time to watch it and see if you think it deserved another season.
