Valentine’s Day came a bit early on The Rookie this season, and episode 7, “Baja,” brings some exciting challenges for a popular couple. With Tim Bradford now leading the Mid-Wilshire Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, his partner in “Chenford” has taken on his previous role. When the show returns to its regular schedule, Lucy Chen will trade in her supervisory duties to go back to working undercover.

At the end of the last season of The Rookie, things were looking bad for the team. After a playful flirtation with arson, the original arsonist retaliated with a powerful explosion that impacted everyone in the department. Tim was seriously injured, but Lucy bravely saved him. Now, in the upcoming Episode 7, “Baja,” the team seems to be recovering and back to work when they stumble upon a disturbing murder. Lucy and Nyla are determined to find justice for the victims, but the investigation will take them away from home and into a dangerous situation.

The Rookie Season 8, Episode 7, ‘Baja’ Sends Lucy Chen Back Undercover

The new season of “Baja” starts at 10 PM, a change that happened soon after the premiere of Season 8. As always, you’ll be able to watch the episode on Hulu starting at 5 AM the next day. Last season, “The Rookie” moved to 9 PM after “High Potential” finished its first season. Now that it airs after “American Idol,” which is expected to continue until May, 10 PM on Mondays should be its regular timeslot for the remainder of the season.

In the upcoming seventh episode of The Rookie, Harper and Lucy will go undercover in Baja California to investigate a double homicide. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Bradford and the FBI team will help with the case, and Nolan and Bailey will try to make their long-distance relationship work. It looks like this episode will bring the whole cast together to solve a single mystery.

Harper became a training officer on The Rookie in Season 2, bringing years of experience as an undercover agent. Since then, she’s become a detective alongside Angela Lopez, letting her use those skills regularly. Chen is also very good at undercover operations and finds them enjoyable. In fact, she and Bradford were preparing for an undercover assignment where they would pose as a couple.

What to Expect from ‘Baja’ and How It Sets Up the Rest of The Rookie Season 8

The trailer for “Baja” suggests Lucy is enthusiastic about going undercover in Mexico to hunt the killer, while Harper seems hesitant. Episode 7 shows Harper with her youngest child, hinting that this case – or the risks of undercover work in general – could worsen her marriage with James. This investigation might be the breaking point that finally makes Harper quit undercover assignments. On the other hand, Chen may discover she prefers field work to her role as a supervisor at Mid-Wilshire.

A major weakness of The Rookie is its repeated use of Harper and Chen in undercover operations. They’ve gained a degree of public recognition, appearing in multiple true crime documentaries featured on the show and being involved in significant cases, like Lucy’s kidnapping. The fact that their undercover work is even remotely successful relies heavily on viewers simply accepting it’s a television show and suspending disbelief.

The “Baja” episode will begin a more extended storyline for John Nolan and his wife, Bailey. Bailey received a job offer in Washington, D.C. from her former Army commander, a position she wanted to accept. While Nolan preferred to stay in California, he supported her decision to pursue the opportunity.

Okay, so episode 7 really kicks off the whole ‘long-distance relationship’ thing for Bailey and her husband! It looks like she’s heading back to L.A. after being in D.C. for work, and honestly, I’m a little worried. It feels like this could be the start of some serious trouble for what always seemed like the perfect couple on The Rookie. I’m bracing myself for a slow-burn drama, and I’m not sure I’m ready!
