After a four-year hiatus, a new installment in the popular thriller series Brotherhood is now available on Netflix and quickly gaining viewers. Created by Pedro Morelli in 2019, the original Brazilian series followed Cristina, a lawyer played by Naruna Costa, who discovers her brother Edson (Seu Jorge) is a leader of a criminal organization. Forced to choose between family and justice, she goes undercover as a police informant to infiltrate his group. The show ran for two seasons with 14 episodes, and now Morelli has released a spinoff movie that’s proving to be a hit.
Pedro Morelli’s new movie, State of Fear, features Naruna Costa reprising her role as Cristina. This time, she must rely on her contacts in the criminal world to assist the police in rescuing her kidnapped niece. Seu Jorge also returns as Edson. According to FlixPatrol, the film premiered on Netflix on February 12th and quickly rose to the top of the worldwide charts. Within just two days, it reached number seven in the United States.
What to Expect From State of Fear on Netflix

In State of Fear, the criminal organization known as the Brotherhood is thrown into turmoil when its leaders are moved to high-security prisons, putting the group’s future at risk. When the Brotherhood’s founder, Edson, discovers his daughter, Elisa (Camilla Damião), has been kidnapped by crooked police officers, her aunt, Cristina, attempts a rescue. Meanwhile, the Brotherhood initiates a wave of attacks on police stations – known as the State of Fear – plunging São Paulo into chaos.
The movie successfully captures the action and atmosphere that fans of Brotherhood were hoping for. State of Fear also nicely concludes some unfinished storylines from the original series, while still hinting at future possibilities. As the first spin-off from a Netflix Brazil original, it could pave the way for similar movies on the platform – which is great news! Netflix already offers a huge variety of international content, introducing audiences to diverse cultures and entertainment from around the world.
This film is a gripping crime drama with a powerfully emotional ending, offering a gritty and realistic portrayal of the criminal world – a style Brazilian dramas excel at. While comparisons to the acclaimed City of God are tempting, they aren’t fair, as this film doesn’t quite reach that level of excellence. However, it stands on its own as a worthwhile watch, and is especially enjoyable as a continuation of the Brotherhood series. It’s a Netflix original that has rightfully earned its popularity.
