Grace Van Patten and Jackson White are, thankfully, nothing like their Tell Me Lies characters.
The actors playing Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco are actually a couple in real life. Their characters’ relationship in the Hulu show is a troubled one that unfolds over eight years.
Grace explained to TopMob News in December that she and her co-star are very different people, which made filming their confrontational scenes enjoyable. She said playing such mean and over-the-top characters was fun because it was so unlike their real-life personalities and relationship.
It’s enjoyable to fully immerse yourself in a role, and it feels even better and more comfortable when you’re working with someone you have a strong connection with,” she said. “It’s a really wonderful experience.
Although their love story isn’t quite like Lucy and Stephen’s on the show, Grace and Jackson owe their relationship to it. They first met in 2020 while auditioning, but didn’t feel an immediate connection. They confirmed they were a couple in October 2022.
She confessed on the Call Her Daddy podcast in October that she wasn’t a fan of Jackson. She’d heard he was the frontrunner, so she was happy for him. When he started performing, she told him she thought he was a really dedicated, serious actor – almost too serious, which she found a bit much at first. But ultimately, she admitted he was very good.
Grace explained that during chemistry reads with potential actors for the role of Stephen, she thought, ‘Even if we don’t click, he’s exactly what the part needs.’ She was very impressed with his talent and ability.
When Grace, 29, finally met him in person for the next auditions, she said things felt completely different. She explained, “He just told me he’d been really nervous during the Zoom call.”
They were with a group of friends when the connection between her and Jackson became obvious.

She often struggled with anxiety and didn’t feel comfortable sharing that with others.
She explained that this was the first relationship where she felt comfortable enough to be vulnerable and express her anxieties. She felt incredibly calm and understood by him, like he truly listened and helped her feel centered and secure. It reminded her of the comfort she got from her mother, where hearing the reassurance that everything would be alright was enough to make her feel better. She felt the same way when Jackson told her things were okay.
Meanwhile, Jack, also 29, is happy to stand by his girlfriend’s side through the ups and downs.
You know, one thing I really admire is independence – it’s incredibly appealing. But what I love even more is seeing someone comfortable enough to be vulnerable and show their softer side. It genuinely makes me want to be there for them and offer my support. It’s a beautiful balance, really.
What’s next for Jackson and Grace? They’ve combined many parts of their lives, but they’re still maintaining separate homes for the time being.
