A new superhero series coming to Prime Video will finally showcase a lesser-known Marvel character. The show premieres this spring and marks Nicolas Cage’s first live-action appearance as Spider-Man Noir, a version of Spider-Man from a 1930s alternate reality. While connected to the Spider-Verse franchise, this series is a separate story, even though Cage also voices a similar version of the character in the animated films.
The upcoming animated series, Spider-Noir, will include familiar faces from Spider-Man’s world, including a new take on Joe “Robbie” Robertson, the Daily Bugle’s city editor who often works with the loud and demanding J. Jonah Jameson. Actor Lamorne Morris, known for New Girl, will voice Robbie, which is being seen as a welcome correction in how the character has been portrayed in past Spider-Man projects and a step towards better representation in future installments.
Robbie Robertson Has Been Ignored by Most Spider-Man Movies
Robbie Robertson is a significant character in Spider-Man comics, but the movies haven’t given him much attention. Bill Nunn played the editor of the Daily Bugle in the original Spider-Man trilogy. However, his role was always very small, mostly limited to a few lines that helped set up scenes for J.K. Simmons’s memorable portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson. After that, Robbie didn’t appear in The Amazing Spider-Man films or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Bill Nunn’s portrayal remained his only live-action appearance until Spider-Noir.
Someone new to Spider-Man through the films might be surprised to learn how important Robbie Robertson is in the comics. First appearing in 1967’s The Amazing Spider-Man #51, Robbie quickly became a key figure. He frequently provides a level-headed counterpoint to the loud J. Jonah Jameson and offers Peter Parker wise counsel when he needs it most. Robbie is a reassuring and steady influence in Peter’s often-turbulent life.
It’s surprising that most Spider-Man movies haven’t delved into the character of Robbie Robertson. This is largely because films beyond Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy tend to downplay Peter Parker’s job at the Daily Bugle. Only the first three live-action Spider-Man films really show how Peter ended up meeting J. Jonah Jameson and Robbie Robertson.
It’s especially exciting that Lamorne Morris will be playing Robbie Robertson. The first trailer suggests Robbie will be a key character in the first season of this new Prime Video superhero show. This gives Spider-Noir a great opportunity to really develop Robbie’s story, something live-action Spider-Man projects haven’t done much with despite him being such a well-developed supporting character.
Why Robbie Robertson Needs to Be in More Spider-Man Movies
Spider-Noir is a good way to give Robbie Robertson more time on screen. Future Spider-Man movies shouldn’t overlook this important character. He’s a steady presence at the Daily Bugle, and Peter Parker’s career wouldn’t feel complete without him.
Robbie Robertson is key to understanding J. Jonah Jameson’s personality. Despite being loud and stubborn, Jameson secretly has a good heart and cares about his employees, though he doesn’t always show it well. Robbie is one of the few people at the Daily Bugle who recognizes this softer side, and he’s the closest thing Jonah has to a friend. Including Robbie helps make Jameson a more complete and believable character.
There’s a possibility the next film will explore Peter Parker’s work at the Daily Bugle, potentially introducing Robbie Robertson into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie will also feature the villain Tombstone, who shares a surprising backstory with Robbie in the original comics.
Honestly, it’s time we started paying attention to Joe Robertson in Spider-Man movies and shows! He’s been a really important character in the comics for almost sixty years, and I think he deserves to be as well-known and loved as J. Jonah Jameson or any of Peter Parker’s other friends and allies. I’m hoping Spider-Noir is the start of something big for Robbie, and that we’ll see him show up in more live-action projects going forward. He’s a great character and deserves the spotlight!
