Anime is famous for its rivalries, and some of the most iconic come from shows like Naruto and Dragon Ball. Characters like Naruto and Sasuke, and Goku and Vegeta, really define this dynamic, showing us why it’s so interesting. They constantly push each other to get better, but their competition also leads to a lot of friction – and sometimes even life-or-death battles.
Anime rivalries vary greatly depending on the story, but they almost always lead to exciting and emotionally resonant battles. While they might not get as much attention as famous fights from series like Naruto or Dragon Ball, these conflicts are often among the best anime has to offer.
10) Ash vs. Gary (Johto League)
Pokémon

Ash Ketchum has had many exciting battles, but his first victory against his longtime rival, Gary, remains one of the most memorable in anime history. This win was a significant milestone in Ash’s journey, as Gary was his initial and primary competitor, fueling Ash’s ambition to become the best Pokémon trainer in the early seasons. Although they battled several times in the first five seasons of the show, Ash didn’t finally defeat Gary until their match in the Johto League during Pokémon: Master Quest. The battle itself is incredibly intense and keeps viewers guessing, ultimately coming down to a tiebreaker between Charizard and Blastoise. Against all odds, Ash and Charizard pull out the win, creating a truly thrilling and suspenseful moment.
9) Yusuke vs. Hiei (Chapter Black Saga)
Yu Yu Hakusho

Yusuke and Hiei’s rivalry isn’t as famous as some others, but they definitely become competitive friends. Their fight in the Black Saga of Yu Yu Hakusho feels like a classic rival showdown: Hiei challenges Yusuke to control his rage and stop him from acting impulsively. It includes a memorable, well-animated fight – complete with Hiei literally kicking Yusuke into gear! Beyond the action, the fight highlights how much their relationship has grown, making it especially rewarding when Yusuke admits Hiei was right. It’s a fantastic fight scene that also delivers a strong character moment for both of them.
8) Spike vs. Vicious (Round 2)
Cowboy Bebop

Although Cowboy Bebop often feels like a series of standalone episodes, the ongoing conflict between Spike Spiegel and Vicious drives the entire story forward. This rivalry finally comes to a head in the anime’s finale, with a climactic showdown at the Red Dragon Syndicate – a meaningful location considering their shared past. While the final fight isn’t as visually famous as their first encounter in the cathedral, it’s even more dramatic and intense. It’s a smart touch that each character uses the other’s weapon to deliver the final blow. In his final moments, Spike reflects the anime’s deeper themes, creating a deeply emotional and impactful conclusion after we’ve spent so much time with him and the Bebop crew.
7) Ippo vs. Sendo (JBC Featherweight Title Match)
Hajime no Ippo

Sports anime often showcase intense rivalries, and the boxing series Hajime no Ippo delivers one of the best one-on-one battles between opponents. The second fight between Ippo and Sendo is a standout moment in the show. You can really feel the energy from both the characters and the audience. The music and voice acting add to the excitement, but the animation and fight choreography are truly exceptional. Even years after it aired, this sequence remains incredible and easily ranks among the most memorable rivalries in anime history.
6) E.N.D. Natsu vs. Gray (Alvarez Empire Arc)
Fairy Tail

The last season of Fairy Tail has its critics, but Natsu and Gray’s battle is a definite standout moment. Though the animation is visually stunning, it’s the genuine emotion that truly makes the fight memorable. The voice actors perfectly convey the characters’ feelings of betrayal and sadness, raising the stakes and energy to an incredible level. They deliver powerful performances, which help make this fight one of the best in the series. While the final season isn’t universally loved, the characters’ incredible power and intense emotions make this a thrilling and entertaining watch.
5) Deku vs. Kacchan (Round 2)
My Hero Academia

The rivalry between Deku and Bakugo is legendary in modern anime, and their second fight at the end of My Hero Academia Season 3 is a standout moment in the entire series. It’s where years of tension explode, with Bakugo discovering Deku received his powers from All Might – and becoming visibly upset by All Might’s weakening state. For the first time, Deku doesn’t back down from Bakugo’s attacks, creating a deeply emotional scene and a major shift in their relationship. The fight is beautifully animated with incredible action sequences. What makes it truly special, though, is how it plays with our expectations – it seems like Deku might finally win, only for Bakugo to unexpectedly turn the tables at the last second.
4) Eren vs. Reiner (Season 4, Part 2)
Attack on Titan

As a huge Attack on Titan fan, I have to say the fight between Eren and Reiner during the Marley invasion in Season 4 Part 2 is just incredible. It’s not your typical anime rivalry, but seeing them clash after Reiner’s reveal is so intense! What really makes it stand out is how much Eren has changed – he’s become so much stronger and more determined. He actually goes toe-to-toe with the Armored Titan in a way he never could before. And honestly, it’s not just the fighting; everything happening around them – the Beast Titan’s chaos, Galliard’s sacrifice – adds so much weight to the scene. It’s packed with action, suspense, and drama – a truly unforgettable moment!
3) Yugi vs. Kaiba (Battle City Finals)
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters

Throughout the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Yugi and Kaiba have many duels, but their most iconic happens during the Battle City Finals. It’s considered not only one of the best duels in the show, but a truly memorable rivalry in anime history – likely fueled by Millennial nostalgia. Both duelists put everything they have into the match, creating a tense and visually stunning showdown where their skills are equally displayed. Ultimately, Yugi wins with a dramatic final move, resolving their long-standing rivalry and setting up future adventures.
2) Alucard vs. Anderson (Round 2)
Hellsing Ultimate

With only 10 episodes, Hellsing Ultimate features a surprisingly great rivalry: the battle between Alucard and Anderson. Their final fight is truly spectacular, with incredible music and animation that make it one of the best anime clashes ever. It’s a dark, violent showdown with an ending that perfectly suits the series’ overall mood. The conflict takes unexpected turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the very end, and ultimately provides a satisfying conclusion to their long-standing feud.
1) Gintoki vs. Takasugi
Gintama

The sword fight between Gintoki and Takasugi is a standout moment in anime, and easily ranks among the best rival confrontations the medium has to offer – yet it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. This climactic battle is beautifully animated with expertly choreographed action that’s captivating from start to finish. Compelling voice acting perfectly conveys the complex emotions between the two characters, and the heartbreaking outcome makes the fight both intensely thrilling and deeply moving. It’s a satisfying payoff to their shared history, presented as a truly spectacular event.
