CBS has ordered a second season of the show, demonstrating confidence in it as a successor to their long-running crime drama. The series debuted in October 2025 as a spin-off of the popular show Blue Bloods, which centered on the Reagan family balancing their careers in the NYPD with their personal lives.
Following the conclusion of Blue Bloods in 2024 after 14 seasons, a spinoff series starring Donnie Wahlberg was announced for 2025. Boston Blue centers on Danny Reagan, an experienced NYPD detective who moves to Boston to join the city’s police department. The show quickly became a hit, ranking among the most popular new series of the 2025-2026 television season.
What Happened in Boston Blue Season 1?
Originally, Boston Blue wasn’t intended to be connected to Blue Bloods. CBS announced the show in early 2025 as part of their expansion plans, but it began as a completely separate police drama. After Blue Bloods concluded, the creators decided to continue the story with the character Danny, relocating him to Boston (TV Insider).
Season 1 of Boston Blue introduces Danny, a detective who moves from New York to the Boston Police Department after multiple transfers. He’s paired with Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), a detective from a family with a strong history in law enforcement – a background that parallels Danny’s own. The season focuses on Danny getting used to his new surroundings while they both tackle a new case each week.
Season Reagan, Danny’s son and a character from the original series, moves to Boston and becomes a police officer, though the role was re-imagined for this new show. While the rest of the Reagan family doesn’t appear, the series pays tribute to the original by featuring the Silver family, who take on similar roles within the cast.
When Danny arrives in Boston and starts using his forceful, New York-style policing, he quickly runs into conflict with the existing department dynamics and his partner, Lena, who prefers a more careful and planned approach. This creates friction between them, but their working relationship improves over time. The show’s premiere attracted a large audience, with 8.64 million viewers tuning in, according to Nielsen ratings (as reported by TV Insider).
Who Stars in CBS’ Boston Blue?
Donnie Wahlberg returns in a new series, continuing his role from the popular show Blue Bloods. While the rest of the cast from Blue Bloods isn’t involved, the new show maintains a focus on family, centering around the Silver family. Sonequa Martin-Green joins as Lena Silver, Danny’s new partner, and comes from a family with a strong history in Boston law enforcement.
As a big fan of police procedurals, I’m really enjoying the family dynamics in this show. Maggie Lawson plays Sarah Silver, who’s a detective and the sister of Lena, but also happens to be Danny’s boss – talk about complicated! Gloria Reuben is fantastic as Mae Silver, the Silver family’s mom and the strong matriarch. And Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters? He brings this really solid, moral compass to the family, kind of reminding me of Tom Selleck’s character, Frank Reagan, from Blue Bloods – a real pillar of strength.
The show features Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Lena and Sarah Silver’s younger brother, who works as a patrol officer in Boston. Additionally, Danny Reagan’s son, Sean, is part of the cast as another officer with the Boston Police Department. The role of Mike Amonsen was recast for the series.
In a special appearance, Bridget Moynahan, known for her role as Erin Reagan on Blue Bloods, appears in Boston Blue. She travels to Boston to support Sean and Danny after their brother, Reagan Jr., is hurt in a fire. During her visit, she helps connect the two series and joins the Silver family for dinner.
When Does Boston Blue Season 2 Premiere?
The premiere of Boston drew an impressive 8.64 million viewers, exceeding expectations and leading CBS to renew the show for a second season in December 2025. According to TV Insider, the show’s creators have suggested that upcoming episodes will likely include more appearances from the Reagan family and a closer look at the relationships within the Silver family.
Following a successful launch this fall, CBS has renewed both new dramas that premiered on Fridays. Boston Blue, which returns from its spring break on February 27, 2026, will be back for a second season as part of the 2026-2027 TV lineup. The network also ordered a second season of Sheriff Country.
It’s expected that Boston Blue will continue airing on Fridays at 10 PM Eastern time. Following recent patterns, the show should return in mid-October, alongside other renewed CBS hits like Tracker, Matlock, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and more.
