Harry Potter’s New Malfoy Actor Reveals How Much He’s In Season 1 (Despite Not Being in the Book)

A new Harry Potter TV series is being made, and one of the actors playing Draco Malfoy has shared some details about filming. While the new cast will offer a fresh take on the characters from the original movies, the series is also deviating from both the films and the books. This means scenes cut from the movies will finally be included, and the show will even add completely new material not found in J.K. Rowling’s original novels.

The upcoming HBO Max series, which adapts Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, will feature Lucius Malfoy, Draco’s villainous father. This marks the character’s first appearance in a screen adaptation of the first book. Johnny Flynn will play Lucius in Season 1 and recently discussed the role with The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Johnny Flynn, known for his role in the British comedy Lovesick, shared that he won’t have a large role in the first season of a new project. During an interview about his upcoming film, Goodbye June – the directorial debut of Kate Winslet, coming to Netflix in December – Flynn was also asked about Harry Potter. The interviewer noted that Lox Pratt, who played Draco Malfoy, had previously commented on Flynn’s striking presence.

Someone mentioned my article about him, and I actually had to ask my children to explain what it meant – I wasn’t familiar with it, Flynn explained. He added that he’s very pleased to be working with this person, and feels the same way about the individual in question. He described him as a genuinely kind, talented, and down-to-earth person who is doing a lot of interesting things.

Flynn discussed his experience working on the Harry Potter series, acknowledging the controversies surrounding author J.K. Rowling but choosing to focus on the positive aspects of the production. He specifically praised showrunner Francesca Gardiner and the directors. Flynn noted that his character, Lucius Malfoy, isn’t heavily featured in the first book, but he was involved in the first TV series. He described the filming process as having periods of intense work followed by breaks, which allowed the cast and crew to build strong relationships, creating a very welcoming atmosphere.

How Will Harry Potter HBO Max Series Compare to the Movies

Many questioned the need for an HBO Max series based on Harry Potter, given the success of the films. However, characters like Lucius Malfoy demonstrate how the series can offer a fresh perspective. The show seems to be expanding on the backstories of characters like Draco Malfoy, offering a glimpse into his home life – which is why Lucius appears in the first season even though he isn’t in the first book. Exploring these favorite characters in greater depth is something best suited for a television series format.

As a longtime Harry Potter fan, I have to say, this new series on HBO Max has me incredibly excited. The movies, while enjoyable, always felt… truncated. So much of the rich detail from the books had to be cut to fit everything into a roughly two-hour runtime. But a ten-season series? That opens up a world of possibilities! One thing I’m particularly thrilled about is the potential to finally explore the House Elf storyline properly. Dobby was great, of course, but the movies largely ignored everything else surrounding them. We completely missed out on Winky, and Hermione’s passionate fight for Elf rights was barely touched upon. This series promises to give that crucial subplot the attention it deserves, and honestly, that’s a huge win for fans like me.

The upcoming HBO Max series has a chance to expand on some interesting details from the Harry Potter books. Rita Skeeter, a problematic journalist who often bothered Harry, might be revealed as an unregistered Animagus – someone who can transform into an animal – which would explain how she gathered her often unreliable information. More importantly, the series could explore the idea that Neville Longbottom was once considered the ‘Chosen One’ – a major plot point in the books that the movies didn’t fully develop. This was a significant misdirection that sparked a lot of debate among fans, and the show should give Neville a more prominent role in the overall story.
