Sex and the City Author Breaks Silence on Carrie & Big’s Pride & Prejudice Ending

This show is widely considered a classic, and people have strong feelings about its characters, romances, and how it ended – including the author of the original book it’s based on, Candace Bushnell.

The writer, whose book inspired the HBO series created by Darren Star, has been open about what she thinks of Carrie and Big’s romance and how it ended. The book draws heavily from her own experiences, including a significant relationship with someone she calls her own version of ‘Mr. Big.’ Despite this, she believes Carrie and Big wouldn’t have actually ended up together in real life.

According to Bushnell, Mr. Big was the kind of person you could never actually ‘get’ in real life. While a relationship like Carrie and Mr. Big’s wouldn’t realistically work, it makes for compelling television.

She compared the couple to Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, explaining that viewers had invested in their relationship for six seasons and were hoping for a satisfying conclusion. It was similar to watching those two characters navigate their feelings and ultimately find happiness.

I always wonder, realistically, if Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy would have actually ended up together. Bushnell seems to think, and I tend to agree, that it’s pretty unlikely in the real world!

She added that Carrie Bradshaw was fundamentally driven by love, emphasizing her desire for a deeply passionate and all-encompassing relationship. However, Bushnell admitted that she herself is likely far more skeptical about love these days.

I was reading an interview the author gave to The Guardian back in 2017, and she hit the nail on the head about Carrie and Big. She basically said that, realistically, they never would have worked out. But the show had become such a phenomenon, and everyone was so caught up in their story, that they became this iconic couple, almost like Darcy and Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice. It was less about a believable relationship and more about fulfilling the audience’s expectations, you know?

Carrie and Mr. Big’s relationship was famous for its ups and downs in the popular TV show. Their story continued even after the show ended, with a dramatic moment where Big left Carrie at the altar in the first movie. Despite years of uncertainty, they ultimately found their way back to each other.

The show And Just Like That… dramatically changed things by killing off Big in the very first episode. The series then followed Carrie as she navigated dating again in her fifties and ultimately learned to prioritize her own happiness, finding fulfillment on her own.

The author openly discussed her relationship, but she doubted it would work out. She told US Weekly in 2017 that her mother never liked Aidan, and she felt she had to support her mother’s opinion. Although Aidan played a significant role in a later attempt to rekindle things with Carrie, it didn’t work. Ultimately, Carrie was able to find happiness without either of them.

Chris Noth and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Real-Life Relationship Has More Drama Than Carrie & Big

Chris Noth, known for his role as Mr. Big, and Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Carrie, have reportedly stopped communicating. This followed accusations of sexual assault against Noth made by several women shortly after the new series, And Just Like That, premiered.

Despite the actor’s denials, his “Sex and the City” co-stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, issued a statement expressing their sadness regarding the accusations against Chris Noth. They voiced their support for the women who have shared their experiences, acknowledging the courage it took to come forward.

For some time now, 71-year-old Noth has publicly criticized Parker and recently made several pointed comments about her online. In a recent interview with People magazine, he stated plainly, “We’re not friends.” He described her statements as simply a way to manage her public image, and expressed sadness, disappointment, and surprise that she hadn’t contacted him to get his perspective on the situation.

Chris Noth recently told the Daily Mail he felt fortunate his character was quickly written off in the first episode of And Just Like That…. Sarah Jessica Parker has not publicly responded to his comments.

Sex and the City and its revival, And Just Like That…, are streaming on HBO Max.
