13 Years On, Marvel Finally Redeemed the MCU’s Most Controversial Twist

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is giving a fresh start to a character involved in one of its most debated plot twists. The new Disney+ series, Wonder Man, focuses on Simon Williams, a man with superpowers who dreams of being a movie star, not a superhero. But he faces obstacles from all sides: the government agency Damage Control is trying to capture him, Hollywood has a rule against superpowered actors, and he’s grappling with keeping his abilities secret from those around him – including a close friend who’s been a part of the Marvel world for over ten years.

The series Wonder Man builds on the journey to redeem Trevor Slattery, a complex character first seen in Iron Man 3. Known for a surprising and divisive plot twist, Slattery’s story continues, both in the comics and now on screen, thanks to a compelling narrative about friendship and doing the right thing.

Wonder Man Helps Continue Trevor Slattery’s Redemption Story

Many viewers consider Wonder Man to be the best Marvel series on Disney+ since WandaVision, and for good reason. Similar to WandaVision, the show focuses more on character drama than typical superhero action, and you don’t need to be an expert on the Marvel Cinematic Universe to enjoy it. The story centers around Simon Williams, a man with powers who’s trying to make it as an actor and actively avoids being a hero.

Given that this story centers around an actor, it’s fitting that it features Trevor Slattery, widely considered the best performer in any Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Thirteen years ago, bringing him in would have been a controversial move. Fans were upset when he was initially presented as a fake Mandarin in Iron Man 3, as it diminished the anticipation for Iron Man’s iconic adversary. However, the short film All Hail the King and his subsequent role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – which finally revealed the true Mandarin – demonstrated that Trevor Slattery is deserving of the acclaim he now receives.

In the Disney+ series Wonder Man, Trevor Slattery takes on the role of a mentor to Simon Williams. The Department of Damage Control (DODC) is interested in either capturing Williams or using his abilities, so they enlist Slattery. Leveraging his infamous past, they pressure him to get close to Williams and monitor his activities. However, Slattery unexpectedly proves his heroic qualities and genuine friendship towards Williams, delivering another standout performance in a role that many fans originally disliked.

Trevor Slattery Was Always a Brilliant Character, Even in Iron Man 3

It’s been 13 years since Ben Kingsley first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Because the Mandarin is such a well-known Iron Man villain, fans were eager to see a showdown between Iron Man’s technology and the Mandarin’s mystical rings. However, at the time, some fans were upset that Marvel had cast a British actor, Ben Kingsley, as a character traditionally depicted as Asian. Ironically, those same fans were even more surprised to learn that Kingsley’s character wasn’t actually the real Mandarin.

When it became clear that Iron Man 3 was based on the Marvel comic storyline Extremis rather than a traditional Mandarin plot, some fans reacted negatively, calling the movie awful. This reaction was an overblown exaggeration. The reveal that Trevor Slattery was simply an actor playing a terrorist – not the real Mandarin – was a highlight of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ben Kingsley’s performance was fantastic and completely flipped the script. In fact, it was a more thoughtful choice than the problematic and stereotypical portrayal of the Mandarin in the comics for many years.

Early on, Marvel tried something unexpected with Iron Man 3: portraying how easily fear could be manufactured through lies and deception. This feels even more relevant today than it did in 2013. While the villain, Aldrich Killian, didn’t quite live up to the hype created by Trevor Slattery’s portrayal of the Mandarin, Slattery himself was a standout. The reveal of his true identity was cleverly done, and it’s good to see the Wonder Man series giving his character a second chance, as he didn’t deserve the intense criticism he received from fans.

Thanks to his appearances in Wonder Man, Trevor Slattery has become a fan favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he’s a character worth including in future movies or Disney+ shows. The surprising reveal of Trevor in Iron Man 3 never deserved the criticism it received, as both that moment and his recent work in Shang-Chi and Wonder Man demonstrate that his character was always cleverly written and ultimately misunderstood.
