It’s a sign of how limited PS5 Pro support is when even brand new, first-party PlayStation games aren’t optimized for the console at launch. This isn’t entirely unexpected, though – Sony has released games in the past that didn’t fully take advantage of its higher-end consoles right away. Still, you’d think Sony would prioritize supporting its own hardware, but a lack of PS5 Pro optimization seems to be a recurring issue.
The initial big PS5 game for 2026 launched with support for the PS5 Pro, but the newest release doesn’t. This new God of War game, called God of War Sons of Sparta, was quietly announced and released during a recent PlayStation presentation. Early reviews on the PlayStation Store suggest it’s a solid game, though it doesn’t take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s enhanced capabilities.
This Is Not the First Time
As a huge fan, I was excited to hear the new God of War game would use the PS5’s DualSense features. But it’s a little frustrating that Sony seems to be pushing the more expensive PS5 Pro – the one that costs $750! – promising better graphics and performance. Honestly, though, I haven’t really seen a huge difference in most games, and when there is an improvement, it’s usually pretty small. It just doesn’t feel worth the extra cost right now.
This isn’t the first time Sony has launched a game without full support for newer hardware. When LEGO Horizon Adventures came out at the end of 2024, it didn’t fully work with the PS5 Pro, and it still doesn’t. Sony never released an update to improve performance on the PS5 Pro, which suggests God of War Sons of Sparta might not receive a similar update for full PS5 Pro support either.
The new God of War game isn’t demanding in terms of technology, so it won’t benefit as much from the increased power of the PS5 Pro as some other titles. Still, Sony could have offered something extra for its most dedicated fans with this release. It now seems likely that future, smaller games from Sony, such as LEGO Horizon Adventures, will skip PS5 Pro enhancements altogether.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Feel free to leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. Are you disappointed with your PS5 Pro purchase due to the lack of support?
