Pokémon Classic Collection rumours explained: Are the original games really coming to Switch 2?

As Pokémon nears its 30th anniversary, excitement is building for a major announcement. Rumors are circulating about a potential ‘Pokémon Classic Collection’ bringing the original games to the Switch 2, and we’re breaking down everything we know.

Pokémon Day is coming up, celebrating 30 years since the original Pokémon Red and Green games were released on Game Boy in 1996. Because of this milestone, people naturally expected some exciting announcements, even without any inside information.

There’s still discussion about how these older Pokémon games might come back, but let’s explore what a potential Pokémon Classic Collection could look like!

Pokémon Classic Collection rumours explained: Are the original games really coming to Switch 2?

Right now, there’s no solid proof that the very first Pokémon games will be released on the Nintendo Switch or its upcoming successor, the Switch 2.

The recent buzz started with a post from Riddler Khu on X (formerly Twitter). They shared pictures of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen with a message hinting at a possible re-release: “They will return soon.”

If the rumor is true, we’ll likely learn more during the official Pokémon Presents livestream on February 27th.

Riddler Khu has accurately leaked Pokémon information before, but their predictions haven’t been as reliable lately.

Centro LEAKS, the source behind many of the Pokémon Generation 10 leaks, shared additional information on X (formerly Twitter).

As a fan, I’m really hoping these games come out as individual purchases on the eShop. That would be different from how Nintendo usually does things with older games – they’ve been adding a lot of classics to the Nintendo Switch Online service lately, like those GameCube titles. It’d be cool to have the option to buy these separately!

However, there are some sources pointing to full-on remakes instead, as reported by Game Rant.

Pokémon games have been reimagined before. For example, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were updated versions of the original Pokémon Red and Blue, released on Game Boy Advance in 2004. The original Red and Blue also received an improved version called Pokémon Yellow in 1998, which was later remade as Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! in 2018.

Right now, all we can do is wait and see what happens. We’ll know for sure soon, and if we learn anything new and reliable, we’ll update this page.
