While it might seem unexpected to hear Scorsese in the Star Wars universe, he has a connection to the franchise. He’s previously worked with the show’s director, Jon Favreau (who appeared in Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street), and, crucially, he’s been a longtime friend of Star Wars creator George Lucas. Lucas even presented Scorsese with the Best Director Oscar, standing alongside fellow filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg.

Interestingly, Jon Favreau voiced Rio Durant, one of the last characters from the Ardennian species seen in a Star Wars film—he appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story. While there’s no direct evidence linking that character to the one Favreau is playing in the new film, Star Wars often features family ties between characters, so it’s a possibility.
